Double Sessions in Schoolo Can Be Bad, Survey Indicates (Editor's Note: This ia an other in the series arti cles about schools and prob lems in which parents are interested. The articles have been furnished by the National Education associa tion.) Washington, D. C-Double sessions, a last resort effort in some communities to meet the classroom shortage, can be en dured for one year in an emergency, but if continued for long can be disastrous to pupil learning and teacher morale. Clara J He's young, but he has a kind heart. Edna R. I am at my wit's end trying to help my 25-year-old sister, who happens to have less sense than a 5-year-old. At 18 she got involved with a married man and bore a son out of wedlock. She was con vinced he was going to marry her and insisted on keeping the child. Well, no such luck! The cad had just had a baby by his wife and had no inten tion of leaving her. Now Clara has gotten -involved with a kid of 20. This boy is very handsmoe, but he looks like 17. It's a laugh to see them together. I am taking care of my sister's son until she can make a home for him. Butvif she marries this gu: I know I'll have my nep hew back on my hands in no time. Clara J It's all very well for Edna to laugh at my boy friend, but she doesn't realize how rough things are for me. Several times during the past few years I have gotten serious with men. But when I told them about my son they dropped me like a hot cake. One man said he would marry me if I gave the boy out for adoption. I don't want to" do that. I love my son and want to keep him. When I told Jack about my age and my son, he said it didn't make any difference o him. He loves me anyway and wouldn't make me give up the boy. Jack is young but he has a kind heart. I have spok en to some of my friends and they say five years don't real ly make much difference when there is love. The Council: We agree that that a five year age gap isn't serious when love is involved, but we think it is important to consider which five years are involved. At 20, Jack is not of an age to know whether he real ly wants to marry an older woman with a child. It is easy for him to take these things lightly. He just doesn't know what they mean. ATTENTION THRIFTY HOUSEWIVES I 2 Miles Southwest of Phoenix on Pioneer Rd. vanced by the National School Boards association in a new publication "What Price Dou ble Sessions?" The pamphlet is based on a doctoral study made by Eugene Oliver which was concerned largely with what happened at one high school in Arlington Heights, 111. That school was forced At Arlington juniors and seniors attended class from 7:25 ajn. until 1:10 p jn.; fresh men and sophomores were in school from 11 suQ. until 4:45 pjn. During the overlap per iod there were three lunch periods, so that one-third of on proDiems tnat nave neen dealt counselors. Clara has a difficult prob lem and we can understand why she leaps at a possible solution. Unfortunately, easy solutions to difficult problems are rare. In this case we are afraid that no, solution is be ing offered. When a youth of 20 says that the existence of a 6-yar- old child makes "no differ ence," he just doesn't know what he's talking about. This negative position is not enough. The man Clara mar ries should have a positive desire to know and love this child and must want to make a home for him. It can make a favorable difference with a man mature enough to under stand the responsibility in volved and willhig neverthe less to undertake it. - Edna's' sneering about the relationship is unkind and does her sister no good. It forces her to fight to defend herself rather than to face the real issues. Clara should be encouraged to seek better re lationships with men who have a higher sense of pur pose in life than those she has met in the past. Her child can be a help to her rather than a hindrance if she re members that she must main tain high standards for his sake. - Shoplifting Cases Reported to Police Four cases of shoplifting at Van Lee's 88-Cents store, 127 North Central ave., were re ported to Medford police Mon day and Tuesday by Thomas Paul Shuler, assistant man ager of the store. , Police said all cases in volved juveniles, and that complaints were signed against three youngsters in volved in two of the cases, while no complaints were signed in the other two cases. The" three against whom complaints were signed in cluded two boys, 11 and 13, from Central Point, and a 15-year-old. Ashland girl. Effect Found The effect on the education al program, Dr. Oliver found, was: A 24 per cent reduction in the time students spent in class. Study hall time was greatly reduced. A striking reduction in use of library resources. A 27 per cent decrease in enrollment in music. Students spent less time in school, before and after class es. Grades declined slightly, with the greatest loss to stud ents who had been above aver age. Most striking was a 54 per cent reduction in student par ticipation in extra-curricular activities, including athletics, dramatics, speech, music, pub lications, student council and student clubs. Most of the upper clawmen, who got out of schoolCfti the early afternoon, liked the ar rangement; most of the fresh men and sophomores, in class until late afternoon didn't like it. Impact on Attendance The study showed that doubling up had no significant impact on attendance, disci pline, or student morale. Fac ulty members worked an eight hour day, as usual, but there was an adverse effect on their morale, atVibuted to split f ac culty meetings and the lack of opportunity for the whole group to meet at one time. Only one parent in four felt that' tiie achievement of his own son or daughter had been adversely affected. Some saw advantages in the double shift, such as the added time for a part time job, help around the house or other activities. Among the upper classmen,, whose afternoons were for the most part free, 68 per cent got part .time jobs. Dislike Arrangement The teachers liked the ar rangement less than any other group. Thes. complained of lack of opportunity to give individual attention to stud ents, before or after regular school hos. Curriculum im provement programs which had been planned had to be abandoned, and there was little opportunity for experi mentation. There was a slight rise in the per capita operating cost of the school, disregarding the building fund, but the rise was thought to be due to other factors than the double ses sions. Overall, the conclusion was that when there are double sessions "children receive less education and a poorer quality of education."
