Mrs. M.S.-The right woman can teach him. Gloria S. - Is it silly to con sider little personal habits when you are thinking of marrying a man? John is quite good looking, makes a good living and says he's very much in love with me. I have gone with him for about a year. But I have never been able to get used to cer tain things he does, like pick ing his teeth in public, cough ing long and loud and then spitting into a handkerchief, blowing smoke into my face and scratching himself. When I gave him a hint about how I felt, he just laughed and ignored it. My mother thinks I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. . Mrs. M.S. - Gloria is 28, well past the age when she should allow such nonsense to come between her and a good chance for marriage. I doubt whether she'll be getting bet ter opportunities than this. Often in the past Gloria has let other little things like this prevent marriage. One man was madly in love with her, but she couldn't stand his for eign manners and the way he dressed. Another had a very slight physical defect. Both these men are now happily married and make good hus bands. This man, John, comes from a very poor home and was probably never taught any better. The right woman can teach him manners. The Council: In her eager ness to see her daughter mar ried, Mrs. M.S. appears to be lumping too many things to gether. It is true that young men and women often accept or reject one another for petty or foolish reasons, but man ners of the kind Gloria des cribes are not necessarily a superficial aspect of the per sonality. , Possibly good manners weren't drilled into John, but it is inconceivable that he can net have discovered by his late 20's that many people are offended by the behavior Gloria describes. Whether or not he admits it to himself or others, John knows that his actions are disagreeable to ob serve. He may nave a per verse desire to offend others or he may want to flaunt his own poor opinion of himself and his background. In any case, this is no long er a question of surface things like a slight physical defect or foreign mannerisms. John's manners - or lack of them - are an expression of a real personality disturbance. This disturbance may not make him totally unfit for marriage, but it is certainly something to think about seriously. We would not recommend any girl's plunging into a mar riage with a man whofj havior repel her. ContraryS ivirs. M.b. notion, such men are not easily taught after marriage. Instead of pressuring her daughter into marriage be cause of her late age, we think Mrs. M.S. would be wiser to stick to the sidelines and point out the good character istics of Gloria's men friends when she feels her daughter overlooks them.
