'& ill -"fy- ijiwwi ' ' ' BIGGEST FIRE The biggest and by far the most spec tacular fire in Medford so far this year swept the Mor ton Milling company buildings on Jackson st. at the Southern Pacific tracks Friday night. Over 40 Medford firemen fought the blaze, following a battle plan com parable to those drawn up and rehearsed for other major structures in the city. Billowing smoke and burts of flame crossed the railroad tracks (upper left) and for a short while appeared to threaten the propane gas tank farm downwind (lower left). One fireman high on a ladder is visible in this second picture, spray ing a jet of water towards theconflagration. From the south side of Jackson st. (upper right) firefighters and photographers could watch the flames march relent lessly through the buildings, defying dogged hose crews (lowe rright) who braved heat, smoke, flying cinders and the danger of falilng wires. Antique automobiles will be displayed by E. M. Tucker, Medford, and floral decor ations will be provided by Ginn's Flower shop. All items in the displays will be for sale and beginners as well as the advanced col lectors will find articles of interest to them, club officers said. Ettles, Med ford, Ralph E. Hollingsworth, Ashland, Lloyd H. Kelley, Eagle Point, and Lowell L. Woods, Ashland, the bureau of reclamation office at Camp White has announced. Awards to Ettles, Holling- worth and Woods were pre sented in recognition of the high degree of proficiency with which they accomplished their assigned duties, qualify ing them for outstanding per formance ratings, reclamation officials said. - Kelley's award was pre sented under the department of interior's incentive award program, giving special recog nition to a valuable contribu tion to the efficient and effec tive accomplishment of the bureau's program. All the men are employed at the Camp White office of the bureau of reclamation. Boy Shoots Matches, Causes a $2,000 Blaze Englewood, Colo. (DPD Fire Chief R. George Woods said yesterday a 12-year-old boy started a $2,000 blaze by shooting ,match heads from the muzzle of an air rifle. The boy shoe the match heads at a cinder block to ignite them, Woods said. One of them bounced under the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray mond McBroon, and started a fire which took two hours to extinguish. Troutdale plant Friday said it would be at least 30 days before three potlines of the c o m p a n y's aluminum smelting operation were re turned to "anywhere near normal operating conditions." An eight-hour work stop page by members of the United Steelworkers Union Wednesday prompted the company to cut off power to the four potlines of the opera tion. H. W.
