In the Day's Hews ly FRANK JENKINS Something worth knowing: The people of the United States own about 43 billion i dollars worth of U.S. Savings Bonds. That represents about 15 per cent of the national debt. "DIG question: How did the people of our country GET these bonds? - The answer is interesting. They saved up the money, a little at a time, and put it into these bonds, which are de signed specifically for just such a purpose. A lot of the money came out of payroll savings. Under the payroll savings plan, you instruct your employer to take so . much out of your paycheck every .. week, buy savings bonds with it and keep the bonds for you, turning them over to you whenever you need them. 'Meanwhile they EARN IN TEREST for you. THE chances are you don't miss the' money as , it is taken out. of your paycheck. Then- Some fine day, when you happen to think of it, you' count up your bonds. : You'll probably be sur prised. You may . be AMAZED. All of a sudden, you'll dis cover that you're an INVES- TOR. It's a pleasant feeling. WHAT do you do next? If W11 MAYBE vou'll dis cover when you count up your savings bonds that you have enough to BUY A LIT TLE STOCK in a growing business. A lot of people do just that. According' to the best figures available, some 12 MILLION people in our country are owners of stocks that are listed on the big exchanges. That will mean that from then on you are a partner in American Busi ness. . If that happens to you, and If you like the feeling, just remember that it all started on the day, when you instruct ed your employer to hold a little out of your paycheck each week and BUY SAV INGS BONDS with it. ONE more word: Some pessimist may get hold of you and tell you that because of inflation (which keeps prices rising constantly) your Savings Bond, when it matures, won't buy as much, interest and all, as the money would have bought when you started saving. If that happens, consider this: If you had spent the money instead of saving it, it would have gathered no moss. And you would have no sav ings. 4 WORD in conclusion: XX The U.S. Treasury esti mated recently the value of Savings Bonds HELD in trie counties of the state of Ore- go. The fieures are interesting In the five counties of that we commonly call Southern Oregon, some 52V2 MILLION dollars worth of Savings Bonds are OWNED by the people. The figures for Cali- t fornia aren t available as this V, is written, but it is probable that the people of Far north ern California own as many Savines Bonds as are owned in Southern Oregon. That ; counts up to more than 100 ' MILLION DOLLARS. . It isn't hay.
