The rip-roaring Indians, now only a game out of first place, have won eight in a ' row and they can credit their last two victories to Cola vito's personal account. Rocky, whose two homers beat the Yankees Tuesday, smashed his 38th home run of Roseburg Dragsters Largest array of dragsters to be seen thus far this sum mer is expected to be In com petition this Sunday at the Roseburg Disaster Benefit races at the Camp White drag strip. Hailing from Eureka, Calif., will be John Nickle driving a Chrysler-powered entry that made its debut at Redding, Calif., two weeks ago. Colavito came through with the clincher Wednesday night in the bottom of the eighth inning off Ryne Duren after the Yanks had tied the score in the top of the frame on Elston Howard's two-run double. The league-leading White Sox dropped a 7-6 decision to the Red Sox and with Benefit Tune Up top speed of 125 miles per hour in the standing start runs. Last Sunday he emerged top eliminator over in races in Eureka, ' Calif. Both of the Ashland drag ster entries are expected to be on hand gunning for the fastest speeds possible against the electronic timing clocks. Paschke Driving Larry Paschke, top elimin ator from the last Southern Oregon Timing association sponsored drags, will be try ing to increase his speed in the Road Knights Oldsmobile powered machine. Ashland service station op erator Lou Wolffe is expected to return to the strip after a month's absence with his quick-starting Ford powered speedster. Wolffe has been a top eliminator two times dur ing the summer races and is always considered a top con tender, not because of how fast a speed he can record with his "B" class dragster, but how quick he can traverse the 1,320-foot course. He has beaten many driv ers whose machines would register faster times but whose elapsed time (time taken to race from start to finish line) would be greater than his. 150 MPH Aim Medford's Noel Black spent several hours at the drag strip last Sunday tuning his poten tial record breaker. Black has been plagued all season with numerous small troubles. Once he cures these he may make runs of nearly 150 miles per hour. Jim Wilson, Grants Pass, is reported nearing comple tion f on his new Chevrolet powered dragster that has never been tested on a drag strip. The bond on the strip rec ord of 144.46 ro.p.h. stands at $175 and should this mark hold through Sunday it will be raised to $200 for the Cen tennial Gas Championships, scheduled for Sept. 12-13. Time trials are slated to open at 9 axa. with elimina tions being run after lunch. Managers Of Basilio To See Tiff San Francisco-TOPD -Thanks to a couple of passes, Car men Basilio was assured to day of having his co-managers on hand for Friday night's NBA middleweight title fight with Gene Fullmer. But both pilots-John De- John and Joe Netro-will be present as spectators only and not empowered to work in the corner of the onion farmer from Chittenango, N. Y. Neither man applied to the California Athletic Commis sion for a manager's license after a New York grand jury was told that they had talked with the notorious Frankle Carbo while the latter was a fugitive from justice. Thus the head man in the corner will be Angelo Dundee of Miami Beach, Fla., who re ceived a green light Wednes day from the athletic commis sion to take out a second's license. "I'll get passes for DeJohn and Netro," said matchmaker Bennie Ford. "But I don't know where they will sit" The bout is expected to gross about $200,000 at the Cow Palace, according to Ford. Arnold Reigger Shatters Mark Vandalia, Ohio-OIPD-Arnold Riegger of Castle Rock, Wash., shooting in the 60th Grand American, made trapshooting history Wednesday by break ing 250 targets to run his con secutive string to a record 1,420. Joe Heistand, a Hillsboro, Ohio, farmer, set the old rec ord of 1,404 in 1938. On registered clays, Rieg ger piled up 200 more to give him 1,020 in this classifica tion. Heistand still holds the registered target record of 1,179. Most northerly point in con tinental U. S. is the Minnesota Angle country. Colavito, a notoriously strong September hitter ripping the ball the way he is, they could be in for trouble. Leads AL in Homers Right now, Colavito leads the American league in hom ers and is tied with Wash ington's Harmon Killebrew for the most runs batted in. Each has driven in 95. Baltimore reclaimed third place with a 6-3 triumph over Kansas City while- Detroit moved into a tie for fourth by defeating Washington, 3-2. In the National league, Pittsburgh topped San Fran cisco, 5-4, in 10 innings; St. Louis beat Milwaukee, 5-2, and Chicago defeated Cin cinnati, 9-5. Los Angeles and Philadelphia were not sched uled. Two errors by the usually smooth-fielding White .Sox contributed toward their de feat at the hands of the Red Sox. Al Smith dropped Vic Wertz' fly ball during a four run Boston rally in the seventh and the Red Sox add ed two more unearned runs. Jerry Walker registered his ninth victory with a helping hand from Milt Pappas in the eighth. Bud Daley not only lost his ninth-game but was fined $50 for hitting Nieman on the left elbow with a pitch in the fifth inning. Bunning Fans 11 Jim Bunning, the American league strikeout leader, fanned 11 Washington batters but still needed the aid of three Detroit relievers to nail down his 13th triumph. Bun ning had a one-hitter until the eighth. The Giants' loss to the Pi rates was more a blow to their morale than to their NL lead. Since the second-place Dodg ers were idle, the Giants' lead was only shaved to three games but what really hurt was the fact that Jack San ford had Pittsburgh beat 4-0 on two hits until the ninth. Larry Jackson pitched a seven -hitter against the Braves and struck out seven in winning his 11th for the Cardinals. The Cards hopped on Carlton Willey for two runs in the first inning and scored what proved to be the deciding run in the fifth on Joe Cunningham's single and Ken Boyer's double. Tony Taylor collected four hits and Irv Noren drove in three runs with a pair of dou bles to lead the Cubs to their victory over the Reds. Auburn joined the bracket of four teams Wed nesday with a 3-1 victory over Gadsden, Ala., which was hurt by the wildness of pitcher Mackey Moates Antonelli Value High To Giants By HAL WOOD San Francisco (DPD Most valuable player in the Na tional league this year as the pennant drive goes down the home stretch has to be Johnny Antonelli of the San Fran cisco Giants. The handsome Italian from Rochester, N.Y., not only has kept the Giants in the thick of the battle-and on top most of the way-with his pitching, but he has been the club's outstanding all-around ball player. Elroy Face of Pittsburgh has been a mighty important cog in the Pirate scheme; Don Drysdale has been a big help to the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Hank Aaron, the man with the big bat, has been the key to whatever success Milwaukee has had. But it's doubtful that any of them has contributed as much to his team as Antonelli has to the Giants. Take a look: Leads Both Leagues in Wins -Johnny has chalked up 18 victories against seven losses. He has won more games than any other player in either major league. -He has been a fine hitter. So strong, in fact, that early in the season he was used as a pinch-hitter. During recent weeks his own big bat has played an important part in victories he has pitched, in cluding home runs in his last two games. -Manager Bill Rigney regu larly calls on the speedy An tonelli as a pinch base-runner. And Johnny runs the bases with the skill and daring of a Willie Mays. "He's just a great all around ball player," says Manager Bill Rigney. "He's good at pitching, fielding, hitting, running bases'. Nearly 2,200 athletes from 24 North and South American countries paraded into Soldier Field and all of the complaints over lack of training facilities, inadequate diets, poor trans portation and other petty an noyances, will be forgotten. They marched into the jamjned 100,000 seat stadium to hear a welcoming address by " President Eisenhower s brother, a 24-gun salute, and watched 5,000 doves of peace loosened into the heavens. To Fire Gun Salute Dr. Milton Eisenhower de- lievered the major speech, bidding the competing nations welcome and wishing them the best of luck in the. ath letic competition to begin on Friday. There was to be a gun sa lute to each of the 24 com peting nations. The Mounties powered their way to a convincing 9-2 win over Portland to move to within a game of league lead ing Salt Lake Wednesday night. Joe Taylor, who has been a big reason for the Mountie LA Slates Crucials Against SF Los Angeles -(DPD- The Los Angeles Dodgers open an 18- game home schedule Friday night that could either make or break their pennant dreams. And their toughest test will come right at the begin ning of the home stand when they face the National league leading San Francisco Giants in a three-game' series. Don Drysdale, who let off a little steam Wednesday by complaining about "behind by back criticism" after he and the Dodgers turned in a sorry performance on their recent road tour, will face the Giants in the opener. It will be the 23-year-old side-armer's fifth straight try for his 16th win of the season. He dropped four games dur ing the road trip to lower his mark to 15-9. Yacht Club Sailboats In Regatta Sailboats of the Rogue Yacht club placed second, third, fourth and sixth Sun day in a race on Klamath lake, Boats of the club have be come familiar sights on south ern Oregon lakes this sum mer. The club, a non-profit corporation was formed last spring. Commodore of the club is J. H. Foster. H. L. Hoser is secretary and G. E. Fox, treasurer. Object of the or ganization is to promote the science and art of navigation and boat handling, to spread the doctrine of boat . safety and to promote educational projects as a means of train ing youth groups. Rogue and Eugene Yacht clubs have been invited to take part in the Coos Bay club's annual regatta on Ten mile lake over the Labor Day holiday week end. Several local boats are expected to be entered. Dutchman Wins Klamath Falls' Flying Dutchman, No. 230, one of the fastest racing sailboats in the United States had a lead of three-fourths of a mile when it crossed the finish line first in the race on Klamath lake. The Rogue placers were George Cox second, Clay Wheeler third, Gary Sullivan fourth and Herb Hoser sixth. The race was on a seven mile course in light wind. Course was triangular with about 1.2 miles between turning points and the race was twice around. i A highlight of the race was when Hoser's Dinky Dinghy passed Klamath Falls Light ning class boat of twice the Dinghy's size. He succeeds Charles Pell who has accepted a post at Murphy Elementary school. Sandgren, a Pacific univer sity grad, assumes the top football coach after two years as basketball and track head man for the Chieftains. He will continue as track tutor. James E. Bowman has been named coach in basketball and baseball. He Is assisting in football. Bowman received his bachelor's degree from Central State college in Okla homa and his master's degree from Oklahoma State univer sity.
