Giants Bombard Pittsburgh; Chisox Nab 30th by One Run By JOHN GRIFFIN, United Pitft International The Giants and White Sox may well wind up as rivals in the World Series, but they sure are traveling differ ent roads toward the promised land. The Giants like to slug it out in a "big inning," as they did in a 12-5 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night to preserve their 3Vi game National League lead. Even 18-game winner Johnny Antonelli got into the act with a two-run homer. But how about those "White Sox, who think a "big inning" means a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly? The Go-Go-Soxeri gave a typical performance as they came from behind to beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, in 10 in nings and maintain their two game lead in the American league chase. That was mere ly their 30th one-run victory so far this season. Cash Gets Homtr This time they were "treated" to an early homer by rookie Norm Cash. But they had only four hits off Frank Sullivan and trailed, 4-2, going into the ninth. Singles by Al Smith and Cash chased Sullivan and then Jim Rivera and John Romano continued the "bombardment" with singles off reliever Mike Fornieles to tie the score. Chicago won in the 10th when Sherm Lollar walked with two out and Billy Good man drove him home with a double. The Giants, on the other hand, missed scoring in only two innings as they trampled the Pirates for Antonelli's 18th victory tops in the ma jors. Dodgers Whip Phils In the National league, the s e c o n d-place Los Angeles Dodgers whipped Philadel phia, 5-2, to stay a half-game ahead of the third-place Mil waukee Braves, who downed St. Louis, 3-1, in 10 innings. Also, the Chicago Cubs downed Cincinnati 8-6. In the American league, second place Cleveland ripped New York, 6-3; Washington downed Detroit, 3-1; and Kan sas City shaded Baltimore, 6-5. Duke Snider' and Gil Hodges, the two "old pros" who are pacing the Los An geles attack, each whacked his 21st homer of the year, to beat the Phils. Snider's Was the 352nd of hits career, break ing his third-place tie with Ralph Kiner on the all-time National league list and leav ing him behind only "Mel Ott and Stan Musial. Ray Boone, acquired recent ly for pinch-hitting strength, delivered a run-scoring ninth inning single that gave the Braves a 1-1 tie with the Governor Brown Warns Against Monkey Business In Basilio-Fullmer Bout Br HAL WOOD San Francisco-flJPB-Gov. Ed mund G. Brown made a strong threat Tuesday to seek Aboli tion of boxing in California, and the California state ath letic commission warned against any "monkey busi ness" in the Gene Fullmer Carmen Basilio (NBA) middle weight title fight here Fri day night. As the two battlers wound un their training for the big battle at the Cow Palace, the commission forced Basilio to tsn a now contract that 31 . - would "cut out" his co-mana gers, John De John and John Netro. Neither man is eligible for a manager's license in this state-and neither is expected to watch the battle from ring side, although both probably will see it on television. Basilio 2-1 Favorite Late odds showed that Basi lio has been boosted into the favorite's role at 2-1 and it is probable that the commission was cocking an eye at these odds when it warned Basilio against ''splitting" any of the money he received here with Netro and DeJohn. "The first contract had a clause in it stating that Netro and DeJohn would split their share of the purse," said Jack Urch, executive officer of the commission. "The new con tract calls for Basilio to' get 100 per cent of whatever he earns. "If we find at any time that he has split some of his money with the co-managers, he never will be allowed to fight in California again." , Meanwhile, Gov. Brown warned the hoodlums in the boxing industry that he is considering a plan to outlaw professional fighting -in the state of California. "The whole thing smells to high heaven," Brown told a news conference. Brown suggested that Con gress set up laws that would put the states on a coopera tive basis. Wants Federal Regulation "I seriously have been think ing of asking for abolition of boxing in this state unless there are some national laws enacted to clean it up," said Brown. "It has to be on a na tional level. It can't be done without interstate coopera tion." He added that there is little interstate cooperation now and, when a fighter or manager is suspended in one state, he "just goes into an other state." Basilio wound up his major conditioning program Tues day when he went two rounds with sparring partner Leo Owens. It brought to 111 the number of rounds Carmen has boxed preparing for this fight. Today he. just went through calisthenics and limbering up exercises with a bit of road work. Fullmer, who already has boxed about 120 rounds, is in secret sparring sessions yet and hasn't allowed reporters to see his new weapons the last few days. FORTY-NINERS TRIM San Francisco-(DPD-The San Francisco Forty-Niners trim med their National Football league team to 47 players Tuesday by placing two high draft choices on waivers. ' Drain won its third straight game Tuesday night by blank ing the Branson, Mo., Show Me's 6-0 behind the five-hit pitching of lefty Elwood Hahn. Drain, which lost its first game of the tournament it won last year, plays Thursday afternoon against the winner of today's Wichita - Houston game. It was learned Tuesday that Davenport would prob ably be lost for the season. The slick fielding third base man suffered a torn ligament in his left knee in a collision at the plate in Cincinnati Aug. 17. Team trainer Frank Bowman said the injury had failed to respond to treat ment, meaning that Rigneyi will have to continue to go with Jackie Brandt at third base.
