Normal Life Span Of 100 Years Seen For Man in Future Ojai, Calif. - (UPD-A pioneer in the theory of stress psy chology says "no one dies of old age" and envisioned the day when man will have a normal life span of 100 years. Dr. Hans Selye, director of the Institute of Experimental Research, at Montreal, Can ada, said "no one has ever reached the limit of age." Mankind now is troubled pri marily by diseases of stress- wear and tear-and the prob lem of cancer. Once solutions are found to these problems, can can expect an increasing ly longer life, he said. "No one dies of old age. Some disease causes death," Dr. Selye said. , Makes One Nervous Selye was principal speak er at the second annual inter professional seminar sponsor ed by the affiliated psycho local consultants. This year's seminar was devoted to psy chological stress, an area in which Selye is credited with principal contributions. Selye said to the layman, stress is defined as something that tires one and makes one nervous. The physicist says stress is strain. He went on to say man is born with a specific amount of adaptability to life which he can use, but cannot supple ment. How this adapability is used determines the length of his life. , Stress is the date of wear and tear "the speed with which we use up our vital energy at one time," Selye said. He emphasized this was not the same as aging, which he called the result of the total stress over the period of a lifetime. Even a baby who is hungry B a n d 1 e, Sepulveda, Calif. Friend, Administratrix of the Estate of Emily Cloe Frazier Duncan, Brophy, Wilson & Duhaime Attorneys for Administratrix is under specific stress, Selye said. But there is no such out ward sign as wrinkled skin or brittle bones which become evident in persons of advanc ed years.. There is nothing new to the concept of stress psychology, he told the seminar. The the ory dates back to Hypocrates, and in the Middle Ages stress was found to have a definite therapeutic value. Should Be Flogged In that early time, people believed the mentally-ill per son should have the devil flogged out of him, discover ing stress could cure as well as bring about illness. He said such extreme stress had a counterpart in latter-day elec troshock treatment. Selye said the body reacted in two ways to stress; one specific' and the other non specific. He said a disease was, in effect, a defensive reaction against - a noxious stressful stimulus. In hay fever, for example, the swelling of the nasal tissues is a reaction to stress that protects against the pollen. But the hay fever sufferer feels pain from the swelling. The seminar resulted in dis cussion of forms of stress that were beneficial, such as am bition and purpose, and others that were detrimental. 7 Summer SALE! 3 ' wJ'Bl lsSl fill n If mwSS L- " SALE! dossil 2-pc' ' ' ' HssD ; pilm . However, the firm says the adjustment represents noth ing more serious than a nor mal consolidation of earlier gains preparatory to resump tion of the forward move ment on a sounder basis. The Fitch survey says prices now are nearer the bottom of any further correctional de cline than to the tops of the coming rally which it antici pates.
