The Salt Lake City Bees held onto their slim half game lead over Vancouver by being rude to the host Phoenix Giants while scoring a 6-4 win. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Chicago - IUPD - The United States, trying to make amends for some of its recent interna tional showings, marshalled its athletic prowess today for the Pan American Games. With a total of 406 athletes entered in all of the 27 sports on the program, the U. S. was a top heavy choice to win the unofficial team title from her sister American countries and regain some of the prestige lost in the last Olympic games and the world's basketball championships. A total of 24 North and South American nations en tered nearly 2,200 athletes in the games opening Thursday, making it the largest sports event ever held in the U. S. In the 1932 Olympic Games at Los Angeles only 1,500 ath letes took part. The U. S. dominated the en try list for this third renewal of the America's sports festi val, naming a total of 323 men and 83 women to com pete. The U. S. will be the only nation represented in ev ery sport on the agenda for the games Mexico was second with 191 men and 34 women and Bra zil third with 184 men and 40 women. The U. S. was an easy win ner of the unofficial team title in the second Pan American games held in Mexico in 1955 and figured to score even a more lop-sided victory this time. Eager to Dominate Basketball EsDecially. the U. S. was eager to dominate the basket ball competition to make up for its sorry showing in the world championships at San tiago, Chile, last January when it was walloped by Bra zil and Russia. The 14 players on the U. S basketball squad this year in clude most of last year's out standing college, service and Drain Cops Game 2-0 Wichita - 0JPD - The defend ing champion Drain Black Sox, led by the four-hit pitch ing of Stan Dmochowsky de feated the west Foint, Miss., Packers 2-0 in the National Non-Pro tourney here Sun day. Drain now has won its last two games after a first round defeat. ' Drain won the game in the sixth inning when it picked up two runs off losing pitcher Joe Yeager. Jim Pifher's 415- foot double scored Don Smith who had singled. The second tally came across when Pifher scampered home from second on a wild pitch when West Point's catcher couldn't find the ball. ' Drain's next game is with the Branson, Mo., Show-Me's on Tuesday. AUBURN WINS ; Sacramento - IUPD - Auburn, Calif., defeated Alcoa of Van couver, Wash., 11-3 Saturday to win the western Little League baseball title. Indians on March 21 and Frank Lane has been receiv ing congratulations ever since. Single - handedly, the 25-year-old Francona who could n't even break into the Cleve land outfield earlier this year, has won more than 15 games for the Indians so far this season. He has won three of those games with last-inning homers. Belts Two Homers Tito connected for his 16th homer in the ninth to beat the Red Sox 1-0, in the opening game of a doubleheader Sun pine third place Portland, 4-1, Spokane whipped Seattle, 5-2, and San- Diego nudged fast fading Sacramento, 3-2. Claude Harmon banged home four-runs while pacing the Bees to their victory- Har mon, a 33-year-old veteran, slammed a game winning homer with a man on in the seventh inning. The win went to Jim Urn bricht, who came in to pitch in the third inning after the AAU stars. The team is coach ed by Fred Schaus of West Virginia. Dr. Milton Eisenhower will pinch-hit for his brother, the President, and officially open the games on Thursday in col orful ceremonies at Soldier Field. Wenatchee 5. DUDEN THIRD Billings, Mont. - (UPD Bob Duden of Portland. Ore., finished third in the Montana Open golf championship Sun day with a 69 and a 72-hole total of 270. Porky Oliver of Denver won it with a 267 while Smiley Quick of Los Angeles was second at 268. day and then socked his 17th to help Cleveland win the nightcap, 6-2. The sweep ran the Indians' winning streak to six straight and moved them within 114 games of the first place White Sox. The league - leading White Sox split a twin-bill with the Yankees, losing the opener, 7-1, but winning the nightcap, 5-0. Washington defeated Kansas City, 7-3, in the first of two games but the Athletics salvaged the second game, 5-2. Detroit beat Baltimore, 9-5, in the opener and the second Giants had tallied three runs off starter George Perez. Dick Barone, the Bees' sparkplug shortstop, also homered. Curt Barclay, who went all the way for the Giants, was charged with the loss. Jankowski Homers Steve Jankowski belted a two-run homer for the Padres to provide the big blow in San Diego's narrow win. Jan kowski's clout followed a 400 foot triple by Larry Doby. Doby, a veteran of 12 years in the American league, broke his ankle when he collapsed while reaching third base on his triple. The left handed slugger has been bothered by bad back recently and he was obviously in pain while rounding the bases. When he reached third, he seemed to collapse as he toppled over the bag, breaking his ankle. Carl Thomas, the Padre re lief pitcher, was credited with the win while Joe Stanka was the loser. Rainiers Lose 4th Straight Spokane made it two in a row over the Rainiers with its 5-2 win. Dave Hoskins held the Rainiers to six hits - all of them coming in the last four frames. It was Seattle's fourth straight loss after win ning 14 out of 15. Mark Freeman, the Seattle starter, was tagged with the defeat. Paul Pettit spanked his 15th homer for Seattle. Ancient (42) Joe Hatten tossed a four-hitter while he pitched the Beavers past Van couver. It was his seventh win against as many losses. The Mounties broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning when Portland catcher Lennie Neal threw wildly to first on a top ped ball hit by Jim Finigan in front of the p'ate. The throw went deep into the rightfield bull pea and Finigan circled the bases. Eddie Basinski loft ed a bases ema'y homer to give the Mounties a 3-1 lead as they aided the final tally in the seventh when Hatten singled home Joe Frazier. In the National league, a doubleheader between league leading San Francisco and Philadelphia was postponed because of rain. Play was called in the fourth inning with the Giants ahead, 2-1. Pittsburgh won a pair from Los Angeles, 9-2 and 4-3 in 10 innings with relief ace Roy Face gaining his 16th straight victory in the nightcap; Mil waukee climbed into second place with a 2-0 win over Chicago, and Cincinnati top ped St. Louis, 5-3. Hurls Three Hitter Art Ditmar hurled -a three- hitter for the Yanks in their opening game triumph over Early Wynn of the White Sox. Enos Old Folks Slaughter broke a 1-1 tie with a pinch two-run single in the seventh. Bob Shaw scored his 13th victory in the nightcap, pitch ing a six-hitter and striking out six. Camilo Pascual won his 12th game for the Senators in their opener with the A's although a sore arm caused his departure in the seventh. First baseman Julio Becquer's error set the stage for a five- run rally in the third inning that clinched the nightcap for KC. Eddie Yost's grand slam homer and a five-for-five per formance by Harvey Kuenn sparked the Tigers to victory over the Orioles. Frank Lary posted his 16th victory with Tom Morgan's aid in the sev enth. Bob Nieman hit two homers for Baltimore and and then belted a third in the first inning of the nightcap, which was wiped out because of rain. Harvey Haddix, who hadn't beaten a Dodger team in four years, led the Pirates to their opening game triumph over Los Angeles. Not only did he pitch a seven-hitter, but he also doubled with the bases loaded to cap a five-run rally in the seventh. Face, who now has won 21 in a row over two seasons, entered the nightcap in relief of Vern Law in the ninth. The Pirates tied the score in the bottom of the ninth and won the game in the 10th on Dick Groat's two -out single with the bases loaded. The Braves, who moved in to second place and are now four games from the top, won their game from the Cubs on only two hits. Bob Buhl held the Cubs to six hits and won his 11th. Jerry Lunch broke a 3-3 tie between the Reds and Cards with a two -run homer off loser Ernie Broglio in the eighth. Don Newcombe pick ed up his 12th victory, driv ing in two runs for Cincinnati with a single and a home run. The Baptists tucked away the finale with five-run in surance in the seventh inning on three walks, a double by Dean Goddard, a single by Ted Landers and two errors. Ned Landers paced the of fense for the champs with three hits, including a double. Westminster Pre sbyterian won 9 to 8 over First Method ist in 10 innings for third place. Falkenstein Tips Salem Corvallis (UPD Defending Champion Salem was defeat ed by Falkenstein's of Eugene 2-1 in the men's state Softball tourney here Sunday night. Mt. Angel remained unbeat en by downing Corvallis 2-1. In other Sunday games, Springfield eliminated Hub bard 2-1 and Grants Pass knocked out Albany with an other 2-1 victory in the double-elimination tourney. Monday's schedule matched Corvallis and Springfield, Springfield and Corvallis and Eugene and Mt. Angel. Attorneys Post Bail for Layne Austin, Tex.-(UPD-Peace Jus tice J. H. Watson said today that Pittsburgh Steeler quar terback Bobby Layne will have to appear in county court "probably within two or three weeks" to answer a charge of driving while intox icated. Watson said the charge, a misdemeanor, will be trans ferred to the court of Judge John Allen. The charge was filed in Watson's court. The automobile in which Layne and three other pro- football players were riding struck a parked vehicle in the pre-dawn hours Sunday, Layne was arrested and spent several hours in the city jail before two Austin attorneys posted $300 bond. The other players with Layne were not arrested. Po lice identified them as Steel er quarterback Len Dawson, and Cardinal linemen Bill Koman and Jack Patera. SIGNS WITH BRAVES Milwaukee - (UPD Joe rorre of Brooklyn, N.Y., a brother of Milwaukee first baseman Frank Torre, has signed a non-bonus contract with the Braves. Don Wendt hit a three-run home run for Camp White and Ron Peery and Kaye Vaughn slammed two run four-masters for Medford. Pete Hale with two doubles and a single in three times up and Bob Smith was a two baser and two singles in four trips otherwise paced the Whiters. Chuck Marchant, Wendt, Vern Parent and Harvy Tonn each got two' hits for the Veterans Administra tion domiciliary-backed crew. For Medford Dave Hughes naa tnree doubles and a sin gle in five turns at bat. Vaughn hit three for five with a double in addition to the roundtripper. Peery also doubled for the Keglers. Camp White drew 18 free passes to the bases off three Medford throwers while . the Pinmen got just four off the Whiter's Wayne Allen.
