Mrs. Hill, awakened by her pet dog Boots' growl, had opened her mouth to scream. The mouse jumped in. She has been deluged with telephone calls and mail from people wanting to know if the story was true. Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins Grandma "Discovered' Penicillin Basement Carefully hidden away in Nature's cellar is a large group of lowly plants we call the molds and mildews, found mostly on decaying organic matter. Fungus is one of these. All have been with us since time immemorial, but within the last few years the probing finger of science has uncov ered some that have peculiar properties. Some are being made to work for us. . Back in grandmother's time there was no corner drugstore and the doctor lived a long way off. She had to resort to homemade remedies when the family ailed and grandmother did allright. One of the reme dies she discovered came from her own cellar. The cool, musty basement never was lighted by the sun. The only light came from, an occa sional sputtering candle that cast a feeble light. The cor ners were always dark. The walls were of stone. Surface water from the outside seeped between the stones of the wall and soaked into the hard packed dirt floor. Grandfather paid no atten tion to the cobwebs across the rafters or the mold that had formed on the stones of the wall. Mildew and molds grew plentifully here, in the humid air and the darkness. They grew until they formed thin sheets on the masonry and covered the damp earth of the floor like a dirty white shroud. Both grandma and grandpa called this "damp mold." They moved winter fruits and vegetables away from the mold's enveloping presence. Would Heal Wounds Grandma probably didn't know or care that the mold contained spores. . But some time other, she or someone like her, discovered that this mold would heal a wound in human flesh, if it was scraped off the wall and placed on the body. She was on the right track and the train was com ing even though it was a long way off, for the mold con tained something very like penicillin. . - . She didn't know that some day, long after she was gone, science would recognize her secret and make penicillin from this lowly mold. As the years and genera lions roll on, new uses for the molds, rusts, mildews and fungi will be found; uses that today we know nothing about. Even some of our most trou blesome diseases may some day be conquered by a lowly plant now classed as a mold or a mildew. He filed a suit in federal court claiming that on the ba sis of his tax plan he would get some of the taxes he paid in 1956 and 1958. The raid ers are coming to town. A s u r vey v e y reveals that more than 5,600 top e x e c u tives will be need e d b y major the next six Elmer Wateer industry in months. William A. Hertan, presi dent of Executive Manpower Corp., who made that survey, found that the great majority of the 5,600 positions open will fall within the minimum executive salary range of $10,000 to $20,000. Only 1.4 per cent will get $40,000 and up. Overall, 15.2 per cent of these jobs will pay $20,000 to $40,000 a year, Hertan said. He found that more than half of the executive open ings will be for newly created positions with the remainder slated as replacements of cur rent jobs. Companies, replying to the questionnaire, disclosed that during the past year, more than one-fourth of the execu tives placed in the $15,000 to $100,000 salary category had to be found outside the com pany. It seems that marketing and advertising men are in the smallest demand. Execu tive engineers and salesmen in management capacities are most needed. As management rates its top - drawer openings, engi neers come first, sales execu tives second and manufactur ing - production men third. Financial people present the smallest problem. Order of Searching According to- the survey made by Hertan, to secure these new executives, wheth er for replacement 'or new positions, the preferred order of searching for talent as fa vored by most concerns was as follows: 1. Within the com pany; 2. Want ads and per s o n a 1 recommendation; 3. Management recruiter, and 4. Employment agency. Four out of ten companies answering the questionnaire said they do not have a man datory retirement age. Those that do make retirement auto matic at age 65. t Estimated average age of top executives in most com panies fell within the ages of 50 to 55. "Three out of ten companies claimed their top executive team averaged 40 to 45 years of age. What's the favorite method of executive payment: Salary plus bonus, 34.9 per cent; outright salary, 19.3 per cent: salary plus merit raise, 17.4 per cent; salary plus stock option, 12.2 per cent; salary plus deferred payment, 5.5 per cent. . General Economic Barometer Because of the apparent in sight into management meth ods gained through the poll, Hertan said the survey would be conducted semi-annually in the hopes of serving as an indicator of ' executive job prospects and pay, and as a general economic barometer. This job recruiting stuff is giving corporations pains in the neck. It isn't easy for the recruiter and it's a headache for the recruitee who has spent years training a man only to find him snapped up for a few bucks raise or a bonus. John W. Powers, Director of Executive Procurement for Cadillac Associates, executive and engineering placement and procurement organiza tion, will land here from Europe Sept. 1. , He'll explain, according to advance notices, how to hire a $20,000 plus executive what qualities to look for in screening and how to set up qualification's for such jobs. . There's no one handy who can tell you how to keep your executives even though you can't raise they pay several thousand dollars, give them a bonus, a pension, and defer red pay, a fat expense ac count, and membership in a swank country club. NEGROES TURNED AWAY South Fulton, Tenn.-OJPD-A group of 12 Negro students was' turned away Friday while trying to enroll at all white South Fulton High school. Principal Lester Betty told the Negroes that the school had no provisions for enrolling them. He said, the Negroes were "all very nice" when he refused to let them register. Fukuoka, Japan (OB - For Yoshihiko Hayashi, a pound of paper a day keeps the doc tor away. Hayashi, a 58-year-old ragpicker, says he's been eating paper since he was a child and now needs about a pound a day to satisfy his ap petite.
