Phone SP 2-7113 Free Delivery f iPBiSCPIPIlOHSy 1 DRUG CENTRE Three Local High School Students Attend Institute Eugene - Three Medford High school students left here early Saturday after attend ing the 1959 Western High School Press institute, Aug. 17 to 21, on the University of Oregon campus. Representing" their high school publication, the Med ford Hi-Times, were Diane Mohr, co - editor; Margaret Medlin, business manager; and Jim Frake, co-news ed itor. The institute'ofered instruc tion in various phases of jour nalism, particularly those used on the secondary school level. Classes covered staff ing, planning, writing, edit ing, photography, advertising, business management, and mechanical production. Instructors for the courses were college and university faculty members, primarily from the U of O, and Oregon high school journalism ' teach ers. Robert Frazier, associate editor of the Eugene Register Guard, was principal speaker at the annual WHSPI ban quet Friday evening. The conference drew over 211 high school students from the entire Western United States including Alaska and Texas. WHSPI was produced for the third year by the Eric W. Allen School of Journalism under the direction of Dean Charles T. Duncan. Winner of Oil Heat Contest Announced Mrs. Mary C. McCullough, 523 Austin st., Medford, won first prize in the sixth week of the oil heat-o-rama limerick contest, sponsored by the Jackson County fuel oil dealers in conjunction with the Oil Heat institute of Ore gon. Mrs. Marie E. Dizney, 6 Corning court, Medford, won honorable mention. The 10 week contest ends Sept. 26. New Armory Rates Listed by Board The Medford Armory board recently reduced rental rates for use of the Armory, First Lt. Richard A. Greer, board recorder, has announced. . The main auditorium will be rented for $50 per day plus 5 per cent of the net proceeds, he said. Non-profit organizations may rent the auditorium for $50 per day with the additional percent age. Classrooms will rent for $5 per day, and rental of kitchen facilities will be $50. The new rates became ef fective Aug. 1, the recorder said. Board members said 'engi neers have studied the sound problem and sent recommen dations to the adjutant gener eral's office. The board indi cated that sound- proofing would be completed in the near future. Board members include First Lt. Donald M. Ivie, County Commissioner Ralph James, City Councilman Rob ert Van Sickle, Lt. Paul Blair, custodian, Lt. Greer, and Lt. Lyle Brown. Persons interested in securing the a'rmy may contact one of the board members. Bicyclists Return From.Caves Trip Curtis Saltmash and Jerry Smitl of the Medford YMCA and seven other bicyclists re turned Friday from a four day pedal-pushing trip to the Oregon Caves. Equipped with sleeping bags, saddle bags, wrenches and tire pumps, the boys left Medford on Tuesday and pro ceeded via Jacksonville and the Applegate river road. They arrived at the caves Wednesday afternoon and be gan the return trip Thursday. They said that they met with "wonderful" hospitality along the way. . The trip was one in a series planned by the YMCA for older boys. Jacobson, manager of the Medford district office of the Social Security admin istration, said Saturday. "We are interested in assist ing these people in filing their claims," he said. Parents whose claims were turned down because of this limitation may now re-apply and become entitled to month ly benefits. Must File Proof To be eligible, parents must, as a rule, file proof of dependency within two years of the worker's death. How ever, parents whose claims were denied because a wife or child survived the deceas ed worker, have until Sep tember, 1960, - to establish their dependency. This change in the law may qualify de pendents of workers who died as early as January, 1940. A parent - who has established dependency may draw bene fits at retirement age, 62 for women, age 65 for men.
