But I do know that Mr. Nixon was always interested in politics and I feel Richard must have inherited some liking for it from him. What really started him on the road was the way Mr. Nixon talked about the Teapot Dome scandal when Richard was 11. He listened to his father with eager fascination. "When I get big," he told me one day, "I'll be a lawyer who can't be bribed." That was the first step. The next one was al most inevitable. Richard has always read a lot. It was so im portant to him that as a boy he would not only spend most of his free time at the library, but "when he was in the Navy he promised Eddie a penny a page for all the reading he did. Eddie kept track for a while, but then he gave up. Richard himself read all sorts of different books, but when he started practicing law, he concen trated mainly on the Congressional Record, which he "had sent to him from Washington.
