Thursday, Aug. 20, 1959 1 1 I Case Histories Of Ocean Storms Will Be Studied Corvallis-Case histories of ocean storms that sweep across Oregon will be charted by Oregon State college me teorologists with a S280.000 portable weather radar sys tem provided by the Army ii?nal coros. Dr. Fred W. Decker, associ ate professor of physics who directrs ussus weainer re search, was informed of the cauiDment allocation. The high-powered system, capable of "seeing rain and snow" within 250 miles or more, is housed in two vans This is the latest modern equipment used for weather radar work by the Army and Air Force. Now ax Mercury Now housed at Mercury, Nev., where it tracked storms for atomic tests, the equip ment will arrive at Obt about Sept. 15. Scientists know the eauiDment as CPS-9. The equipment will be tak en to Mary's Peak, highest mountain in the Coast Range, and other summits to observe the storms as they move over the coastal reeion. They left for Mexico June . 20, and established themselves with a Mexican family before registering for the six-weeks course of life in Mexico. Some Of the highlights of fered by the school were a visit to the government palace, .the Cathedral and Church of Santa Monica; a bus trip to Ruiz and the Sauza tequila factories at Arenal and Te quila; a visit to a pottery and silver factory In Tlaquepaque Freight Train Hits Log Truck, Trailer "Aumsville, Ore. - (UPD A Southern Pacific freight train strruck a logging truck and trailer just east of here Wed nesday, but no one was in jured. Driver of the truck was Floyd ' Dickson, Canby, and " the train engineer was John Davis, Salem, state police re ported, x ' Dickson said he saw the train too late to stop and that the impact snt logs flying over a wide area. The lead locomotive of the train had its front end push ed in and the truck and fral- er was Knocked over. SP-officials said the train was headed for a plywood mill. Magnuson Praises Conservation Step Washington-OJPD-Sen." War ren G. Magnuson (D-Wash.), Wednesday praised Senate ac tion which approved a mea sure designed to determine the best means of improving conservation of game fish in federal reservoirs. The bill would direct the secretary of interior to estab lish a research" program aimed at finding the best method of conserving reservoir fish.
