Thursday, Aug. 20, 1959 Batista Arrives In Portugal for Home-in-Exile Lisbon, Portugal -IUPB- For mer Cuban Dictator Fulgencio Batista arrived here today by chartered plane from the Do minican Republic for a new home-in-exile. He was prompt ly whisked away by police. He left Ciudad Trujillo Wednesday night and his plane landed here after a transatlantic flight that put an additional 3,000 miles be tween him and Cuban Pre mier Fidel Castro, who over threw his regime last Jan. 1. Crowd Kept Away Z No one was allowed within hailing distance of Batista's plane when it landed at the far end of the airport. News then, photographers and tele vision men were held off by police. '- Batista was escorted into a waiting limousine . which moved off at once with four other cars in procession. He was believed headed for the New Hotel Ritz. 5 Before he left Ciudad Tru JIllo, informed sources said Batista planned to go on to he Madeira Islands, where he will live as a political exile with the permission of the Portuguese government. ; Batista took off in a char tered plane with 16 other Cubans, including two wom en. They all fled to the Do minican Republic from Ha vana Jan. 1, one step ahead of the victorious revolution ary forces which engulfed Cuba under Castro, family in Florida Z Batista's wife and six chil dren were reported still at their home in Daytona Beach, Fla. Batista had been trying to get into the United States and lhere had been various re ports that he would take up residence in Europe. Kiwanians Donate To Roseburg Fund Medford Kiwanis club will donate $500 toward Roseburg disaster relief. The sum was voted by di rectors of the service club yesterday following the Ki wanis luncheon at Rogue Val ley Country club. It will go to Roseburg Kiwanis club for use in connection with that community's recovery from the Aug. 7 explosion which damaged a large area of the business district. Devendra Raj Upadhayaya, director of Radio Nepal, spoke briefly at the Kiwanis lunch eon. He pointed out that Nepalese believe the warm feeling of friendliness he has found among the American people. Upadhayaya has been visit ing radio station KMED and television station KBES and generally getting acquainted with the people here. Committee heads for the Ki wanis Centennial County fan reported at the meeting and fair work assignments were announced. j Medford Kiwanians put on the entertainment for the fun breakfast on Monday at the Kiwanis Pacific Northwest district convention at Eugene. Members put on a skit and 'presented 'the Medford musi cal group the "Charmaines." Members of the group are Sue feaker, Rosemary Doolen and golleen Barr, vocalists, Pam Gilkinson, pianist, and Bob Sheldon, guitarist. Eight Sdtellites Now Orbiting Around Earth Washington-OT-Eight arti ficial satellites, seven of them American and one Russian, are now in orbit around the earth. In addition, two artificial planetoids - one Russian and one American-are in solar or bits. The Soviet earth satellite is Sputnik III, expected to die around Dec. 3. The U. S. satellites are Ex plorer I, Vanguard I, Explor er IV, Vanguard II, Explorer VI, Discoverer V, and Discov erer VI. Actress Gia Scala Will Marry Friday Hollywood-(UPD-Aclress Gia Scala, 23, will wed actor Don Burnett, 28, Friday. The cou ple took out a marriage li cense Wednesday in nearby Santa Monica. Grand champion fat steer in FFA competition Iranians Stage Anti-Russia Parade Tehran !UPD Hundreds of Iranians paraded past the So viet Embassy today in one of the biggest anti-Russian dem onstrations ever held in the capital city of Iran. The occasion was the sixth anniversary of the overthrow of Premier Mohammed Mos sadegh by Nationalists. The Iranians marching be fore the Russian building turned their heads away, look ing away from the embassy, following the national custom of showing dislike.
