Sacred Music 665 Dinner Music PRE-MENSTRUAL TENSION Many women ask me to write a column about pre menstrual tension if only so that husbands will better un derstand the monthly tor ture many a wife goes through, and also, the tor ture that he the unhappy man has to go through. I. am reminded of a remarkable letter I once got from a wo man living on a ranch on the other side of the world. She said, "For some 25 days I am, I should say, a pretty good wife and mother. I love my husband and will do anything to make him happy. I adore my children and they love me. We are a happy household. And then, all of a sudden, be fore my period, I start to get tense, -so tense that I could scream. Actually, I begin to scream at the children and at mv Derfectly innocent hus band. I feel as if I could jump out of my skin. I'm so irritable I can't stand anything "I ought, really, to be shut up somewnere. L am noi in even to. live with myself. Worse yet, in my desperate de sire to get some relief, I start drinking, and sometimes I drink too much. My poor hus band and children slink around, hoping that at least I won't attack them; and then, slowly, I come out of it, and for a few days I'm ashamed, repentant, unhappy, and hop ing my family will forgive me." This, of course, is an extreme case, but there are many women who suffer al most as badly as this poor woman does. Whenever I find such a woman, I start asking about her family gackground, and almost always I find that someone in the family suffer ed from depressions or melan cholia, or some other form of mental aberration. Sometimes I find that one or two uncles were alcoholic, and rarely I find that someone had black outs in addition to mild nerv ous breakdowns. Because I have found this association so many times, I suspect that what in these particular wo men makes the mental depres sion so marked is their small share of an inheritance of de pression from others in the family. Never Married r" I've even met women who told me that they never had married because they realized that because of the severity of their monthly nervous storm, 2 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. B Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1959 woman so treated wno saia she was much better, but my experience in this field is not large. Many doctors, of course, will give tranquilizers, and perhaps these will help. Some women are wise enough and strong enough to keep them selves in hand so . that, at least, their suffering will be theirown, and they won't in flict it on those about them. Parkinson's Disease Foundation There has been established a Parkinson's Disease Founda tion, with offices at 125 East 50th St., New York 22, N. Y. One of their first projects has been to establish a "Brain Bank." Persons with Parkin son's Disease who want to help other persons with this miser able handicap, are now asking their loved ones to see to it that after their death their brain will go to one of the Parkinson's Disease Founda tion laboratories, such as are now being established in a dozen medical schools. Doubt less, more such laboratories will soon be established. A careful study of the brains of patients with Parkinson's Dis ease may give us needed light on the parts of the brain which have been "injured, and also on the nature of the dis ease which caused the injury. S-T-R-E-T-C-H Akron, Ohio - (UPD - Rubber bands up to an inch and a half wide, six feet long and capable of being stretched to 18 feet are being used in ware houses and shipping rooms throughout the country. Ac cording to Clyde O. DeLong, an executive of the firm that makes these king-sized rubber bands (the B. F. Goodrich Industrial Products Co.), they can hold cartons together in stacks so they won't slip- or tumble while being loaded. In fact some of these women said they could not share an apart ment even with one of their women chums at the office. Sometimes I have told the husband of such . a woman how. in parts of Polynesia, an extra grass hut is to be found some yards away from the main family hut; and there, the woman has to live during part of each month. The basic idea, probably, is that, during a time she is "unclean" in the ritualistic sense. But, also, it may be that the Polynesians have learned that, for a time each month, a woman will find it hard to associate with her family. Many a time I ve thought that a wise husband with wealth would retire to his club for four or five days out of a month. Only in that way might he keep his love for his wife. I have read a good deal of what gynecologists have writ ten about this pre-menstrual tension. Many doctors try to treat these women by keeping them from taking on water at that time. They give them less salt and less water, and per hans may give a diueretic, which will make their urine flow in larger amounts.
