Vibration Points To Industrial Washington (Science Serv-ice)-The pneumatic drill may be literally knocking " the stuffings out of the : big muscled worker hanging on to its handle. . Reduced sharpness of hear ing and vision, blood vessel spasms, and damage to bones and joints are but some of the symptoms of vibration sick ness. Scientists know relatively . little about this occupational disease, Dr. Rv.Lomax Wells, . an expert in industrial medi cine here, told Science Serv ice. However, vibration sick ness is becoming increasing ly important with the expan sion in road-building and construction. Very little work has been done on the effects of long-term vibration on the human body. ; Russians Concerned The Russians are also con cerned with the problem, ac cording to the current issue of Scientific Information Re port, distributed here by the Department of Commerce's Office of Technical Services. Several researchers re port, in a journal translated by the Central Intelligence Agency, on the symptoms, causes and treatment of sick ness caused by both high and low vibration. Several rec ommendations are made -by the Russian scientists to im prove ; conditions for the worker: - . .1. Redesign pneumatic . Health insurance Coverage Mounts New York-Science Service) -Twice as many Americans have ' become covered by health insurance since 1948, figures released here show. Likewise, the amount of benefits paid also increased five times the amount paid through health insurance since 1948. . More than 61,000,000 Amer icans' were covered by health insurance in 1948. Within 10 years, .123,000,000 persons were protected against the costs' of medical and hospital care, the Healtit Insurance In stitute reports., .1 .. , Benefits "paid out in "1948 totaled $772,000,000. By 1958 that figure, had risen 50 per cent, to $4.7 billion. The extent to which the health care costs of .the na tion are being increasingly met through health insurance is shown by the fact that from 1952 to 1957 the nation's medical bill climbed by more than 50 per cent, and health insurance benefits designed specifically for hospital' and medical services' increased 118 i per cent, the Institute said. In 1948, benefits from health insurance paid 27 per cent of the total costs of hos pital services and six per -cent of the total costs of physicians' services in the U. S. In 1958, however, health insurance paid 60 per cent of these hos pital care costs and more than 30 per cent of the physicians' costs, Institute figures, reveal. About 90 per cent of all air plane accidents are caused by human errors, according to aeronautical studies. About 14,000 school buses are put into service in the U5. in a year.
