RALPH "DOC" WILLARD Funeral services for Ralph Theodore (Doc) Willard, 79, of 822 West 12th st., who died in a local hospital Thurs day, will be held at. 2 p.m. Monday in Chapel mortuary. The Rev. D. Kirkland West, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church, will of ficiate. Committal services in Siskiyou Memorial park will private. Mr. Willard, the son of Frank and Sara Willard, was born in Elizabeth, Colo., on Nov. 4, 1879. He was mar ried in Chicago, 111., on Feb. 26, 1916, to Anna Elizabeth Carlson, who survives. For most of his life he was em ployed by the "Soo" railroad, and at the time of his retire ment he was a chief clerk. The couple came to Med ford from Minnesota 13 years ago. Mr. Willard was a form er member' fo the Masonic lodge, and was a member of the Medford SPEBSQA (bar ber shop quartet). Oregon district, dental society Friday , at - r : i Alcoholism No. 3 Washington (Science ; Serv-ice)-Alcoholics are being pro duced at the rate of '500,000 annually in the United States, Their life expectancy is 20 years less than the national average, a University of Illi nois scientist said here. "Alcoholism is now the na tion's number three health problem from the standpoint of incidence, lives lost and people disabled," Dr! Andrew C. Ivy reported at the Fourth Annual Institute of Scientific Studies for the Prevention of Alcoholism. Dr. Ivy said there are 8,000,000 persons afflicted with alcoholism 5,000,000 outright alcoholics, and anoth er 3,000,000 "pre-alcoholics." He pointed out that 350,000 alcoholics die annually with the average life span being about 51 years compared to a life expectancy of around 70 for non-alcoholics. After a person has become an alcoholic, he can expect to live an average of 16 years, according to Dr. Ivy. These figures are based on medical records and life insurance statistics.
