The Medical by Homosexual Problems Every so often when people scold me for talking about homosexuality in this column I searcn my soul, but al ways I decide that I am do ing the right thing because, today, there is such a tre mendous need tor more knowledge in Dr. Alvarez regard to this very common mental quirk a quirx which causes terrible unhappiness to hundreds of thousands of men and women, I recently received a letter from a woman a letter which cheers me because she says that a few years ago she. with ner sheltered upbringing. would nave been outraged at seeing in the paper an article on homosexuality. But today she thinks very differently, ?nd she awaits with great in terest every column I write on this subject. What has chang ed her is the fact that recently. when she kept asking her big handsome son why, at 30, he does not seem to be interested in getting married, he told her he couldn't marry because he is so decidedly homosexual in what little love interest he has. Naturally, this was a ter rible shock to her, and ever since, she has been heartbrok en about it. Wondered About Son Now she is remembering the many times she wondered about her son. Even as a little boy, he liked dolls and he pre ferred to play with girls rath er than boys. He was gifted artistically, and he much pre ferred painting or play the piano to baseball. In later years, she often wondered why he always drew away from a lovely girl as soon as she showed signs of getting much interested in him. Now, she confesses to me that she suspects that the boy's father was homosexual be cause he never showed her much affection: he rarely came to her bed, and he quit by the time he was 40. I am glad to hear that Peter Wildeblood's splendid book, It's Against the Law" is now going to be re-published in this country. Everyone inter ested in sexual difficulties should read this moving story of a fine, sensitive and gifted ournalist who was railroad ed into prison by the police. A Maker of Braces - William M. McDonald, of the Children's Memorial Hos pital, in the University of Ok lahoma Medical Center ,i s a very able maker of braces. Each year he helps scores of children to walk again, in stead of just sitting or crawl ing or lying helplessly and hopelessly. A while ago he met little Gregory, a boy of 12 who was born with hands and wrists and legs so deform ed that he could only slither along the floor like some sort of animal. McDonald design ed special hand rests for the boy's crutches and today the lad is walking upright, like man. McDonald and his staff of four are constantly modifying children s shoes with cork ex tensions or elevations or arch supports, and they keep mak ing all sorts of braces, splints, and crutches. Last year they fitted 3,7000 such appliances. read that 95 per cent of this worrk is financed by the Na tional' Foundation, and the Crippled Children's Commis sion. Diagnosing by Machine For many year's I've been fighting a losing battle, trying to get many of my fellow physicians to see that one can not trust entirely to diagnoses made by a laboratory test, or an x-ray film, good as these tests and films may be. There are any number of difficulties in the way of aiaking all diag noses mechanically. - Many physicians today think that if they will only order at least 100 tests, they surely make the diagnosis, and find a way to cure the patient. Actually, in a high percentage of cases, they cannot do this. Why? Be cause, as I often have said in this column, there is no test -that will show that a woman is dying of a broken heart, due to a delinquent son or a son killed in Korea, or a daughter who has made a most unfortunate marriage, or a husband who is drinking or chasing.
