The persons selected will be on call for duty on trial juries through the rest oi 1959. Thpir names were drawn by lot by City Recorder Darell Huson in the presence of City Judge Alan Holmes and City Attorney Joel B. Reeder. They were drawn from a prelimi nary jury list of 200 names. This action followed' ap; proval by the city council last week of an ordinance author izing jury trials in municipal court for offenses against the city. Legislation passed by the state earlier this year paved the way. No Reguests Reeder reported that so far no defendants in municipal court have requested a jury trial under the new procedure. Only residents who have paid taxes on -real property are subject to jury duty, Reeder explained. He noted that this differs from jury procedure at the county level. He pointed out that while Oregon law covering county level juries (district and cir cuit courts) specifies that jur ors be picked from either the latest tax roll or the regis tration list from the last elec tion,' the new state law cover ing trials in city courts does not specifically spell out this eitheror alternative. On Both Lists . Hence, he said, he has con strued the new law applying to city court juries to mean that a prospective juror's name 'must appear on both lists. This eliminates persons eligible to vote in city elec tions but not owning houses or other taxable real prop erty. Those otherwise qualified who can claim exemption from jury duty under state law include: judges; state or federal officers whose duties would be inconsistent with jury duty; attorneys; prac ticing physicians, dentists, op tometrists, chiropractors, os teopaths, Christian Science practitioners, natur opaths, and undertakers; firemen; state senators and representa tives, while the Legislature is in session; and active mem bers of the Oregon National Guard, or those who have served actively with the Guard for six years. Generally, those qualified for jury duty include per sons over 21 who are U.S. citizens, residents of the coun ty for at least a year, in pos LN b HOLDS 318 LBS. County, and Rogue River National forest service offi cials met with representatives of Prospect organizations vand inspected the proposed dump site. County Commissioner Ches ter Wendt said that court de cision on just what its partic ipation in the dump will be is anticipated in the next few days. He pointed out that the court faces similar problems in other areas and is taking an overall view of the mat ter. ' Tentative proposal is that the U.S. forest service make, available to the county court a site a short distance off Red Blanket rd. about two miles northeast of Prospect for a landfill dump rather than a burning dump. . ' Dump Closed A dump near the state de partment of forestry's Pros pect guard station has been closed because of its status as a fire hazard.
