(Pappy) Cole man, 63, of 867 Swing lane, died last night at a local hos pital. He was born Aug. 18, 1895, in Hastings, England. Mr. Coleman, a well-known television Dersonalitv in the valley, was an ardent fisher man and sportsman. His "PaDDv Coleman show" has appeared on television the past six years. When he was 13 he moved from England to Canada with his parents and served with the Canadian army during World War I. He came to the United States when he was 19 and was employed by the United States government to sell Liberty bonds. In 1946, he moved to Grants Pass where he owned and- op erated the Motel Deluxe. He was a charter member of the Rogue Rod and. Gun .club, Grants Pass, and "a member of the Medford Elks lodge. - On June 221936, at Yuma, Ariz., he married Pat Fore. Survivors besides his wife are two sons, John,. Los An geles, and Stuart, Hawaii; two brothers, Fred, Inglewood, Calif, and Leslie, Shafter, Calif.; two sisters Mrs. Jerry Vance, Van Nuys, Calif., and Mrs. Ralph Eagle, Shafter, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 ajn. Monday at Conger-Morris Funeral home with the Rev. G. R. Jacks of First Presbyterian church of ficiating. Cremation will be private in Siskiyou cremator- mm. (Mike) Van Houten, Box 564, Gold Hill,, died Aug. 5 at Emanuel hospital, Portland, where ha had been confined a week. He had lived in Gold Hill since 1909 and was a truck driver for Ideal Cement company for 16 years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Carroll Funeral home, Gresham. In terment will be in Douglass cemetery at Troutdale. Mr. Van Houten was born Oct. 23, 1896, at Jefferson. He attended grade school at Troutdale and Gold Hill. On April 8,. 1930, he mar ried Vernd Hevel in Vancou ver. Wash. He was a member of Teamsters local 962. Survivors besides his wife, include a daughter, Mrs. Wil ford Jones, Gold Hill, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Eva Krist, Hayfork, Calif. The Rev. Frank Cothrell of Fairview Presbyterian church will officiate. New Mexico Man Sentenced Today In Circuit Court Raney Ray Newcomb, Hobbs, N. Mex., arrested by city police on July 7 in con nection with more than a dozen local burglaries and at tempted burglaries, was. sen tenced today to not more than four years in the Oregon state penitentiary by Circuit Court Judge James Main. Newcomb's alleged partner In the burglaries, Cecil Harvel Allen, ex-Hobbs, N. Mex., po liceman, entered a plea of guilty and requested a pre sentencing investigation. He is being held in the county jail. - The pair were charged "pa cifically with the burglary of the Coca Cola Bottling com pany in Medford on June 23, during which $1,162.42 was taken from a wall safe. Police obtained a statement from the men at the time of their arrest, in which they ad mitted taking part, in four burglaries in Klamath Falls, two in Grants Pass, and eight in the local area. On most of their burglary attempts, they got no money. Case Against Bodi Goes to Jury Today Corvallis -rfOPB- The case for and against Wayne Bodi, 20- year-old carpenter accused in the death of a four-month-old girl, was expected to go to the jury today. He ii charged with involuntary manslaugh ter. Bodi is charged with hav ing fatally struck Peggy Su san Smith, daughter of Clara Smith. The defense contended the child's death was caused by a series of falls. Firm Submits High Bid Ross Lumber company sub mitted the highest of seven bids for an estimated 1,960, 000 board feet of timber on the Rogue River National for est near Imnaha guard sta tion. Howard Hopkins, timber management officer for the forest, said that the Ross firm offered $100,445. Sealed bids were opened this morning. Ross offered $61.30 per thousand board feet on Doug las fir and pine which make up about 80 per cent of the volume and $30 per thousand on white fir and other species.
