Thursday, Augur , 1M 5 Portland Arrival Of Mrs. Gatewood Expected Friday Portland -UPD- Emma Gate wood, 71 -year -old walking grandma from Gallipolis, Ohio, is scheduled to end her 2,000-mile, hike from Missouri to Portland Friday morning with a triumphant ride into the city in a white converti ble. Mayor Terry Schrunk and Centennial officials will ac company her. Oregon Centennial Com mission chairman Anthony Brandenthaler said Mrs. Gate wood would have a free suite at the Benson hotel plus food. A motorcycle escort will guide the .convertible into the city and among gifts from the Centennial will be treatment for her weary feet, new shoes, a, full wardrobe, the use of a car and fresh flowers every morning. Grandmothers Day Brandenthaler has declared Friday "Grandmother's Day" at the Exposition and all grandmothers over 65 will be admitted free. Mrs. Gatewood arrived at the Multnomah county line Wednesday and was greeted by Sheriff Francis Lambert, who made her an . honorary deputy sheriff. Deputy Sher iff Bill Glandenning offered to carry her umbrella but she pulled back. "Not on your life," she said. "I need it to defend myself against those commoners with cameras." She had previously ex pressed irritation with curios ity seekers and photographers and Tuesday rapped Hood River photographer Bob Hall over the head with the um brella. Later she expressed remorse and apologized, say ing she was just tired of peo- nlo Krt hon nir hur The spry grandma, who has been taking hikes for years, spent Wednesday nizht at Dodson, just east of Multno mah Falls along the Columbia river. Her walk to Oregon is no publicity junket, she said. "I've been thinking for a long time that I'd like to walk the Oregon Trail." Mrs. Gatewood works in the winters as a practical nurse. During the ' summers, she rents her home and goes hiking. Teamsters Union Being Probed Washington-WPD-Asst. Atty Gen. Malcolm R. Wilkey said today the Justice Department is investigating "wholesale" racketeering, perjury and in come tax evasion by members of the Teamsters Union. ' Many of the inquiries grew out of disclosures in the 30- month-old Senate Rackets department turned up the oth er cases on its own. Disclosure of the Justice De partment action came on the heels of two stinging rackets committee reports linking Teamsters President James R Hoffa with crime, corruption and communism. A grand jury has been reviewing Hof- fa's testimony before the rack ets inquiry for eight months for possible perjury action. Wilkey, head of the Justice Department criminal division, said certain Teamsters' activi ties were of "more than aca demic interest." He rejected any thought that the depart ment was going after" the Teamsters. He said "wholesale viola tions" by certain unidentified Teamsters officials "have been called to our attention.". The department's scorecard shows 39 convictions of 31 Teamsters since 1954. These included perjury, income tax evasion, extortion of kick backs from employers, and Taft-Hartley Act violations. In addition, the government has pending 11 indictments against 4 Teamsters for these . same crimes plus anti-trust violations. Japan Cooperative In Salmon Fishing Washington- (UPD -The Sen ate Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee was told Tuesday that Japan is being more cooperative in handling salmon fishing along the .east-west dividing line in the western Pacific. Donald L. McKernon, di rector of the Bureau of Com mercial Fisheries, said more red salmon have ' been per mitted to escape into Bristol Bay in Alaska this year and added that he was "pleased with the cooperation of Japa nese salmon fishermen.
