Chairman Told for " Public Employees iivuiuii ui uriv, Elliott D. Becken, one of United Medford Crusade's . most active workers, and the chairman of the public em ployees division for the 1959 drive, has announced the ap pointment of sub-chairmen for all sections in the division. Heading the - federal em ployees section will be John Carnegie. Other section heads are: Jack Holmes, state em ployees; M. R. Hubbell, coun ty employees; Mrs. Dorothy Snodden, city employees; Mark, Bogart, Camp White personnel; Robert Sage and Lester Harris, ministerial or ganizations; and Hugh Shurt- leff, school districts. . The public employees divi sion, under Becken's chair manship for tr. past six years, has always been the first UMC division to reach 'its goal in the annual fund raising campaign. Last year's $11,000 goal for the division was over-subscribed by almost $1,000. This year's division goal will be somewhat higher tc help meet United Medford Crusade's - increased goal of $133,782: Active in First Drive Becken was active in Jhe organization of UMC, and was campaign chairman for the first drive in 1953-For three years he served as a board member and is now an hon orary member of the board. Among other civic activities are his membership in the Medford Lions club and Elks lodge, and on the Medford Library board and Safety Council. v Becken has been- assistant superintendent of schools in Medford since he and his wife cam here from Astoria in 1948. The Beckens have two children, Nancy, 17, a senior at Medford High school, and Gregory, 12, a student at Hed rick Junior High school. Chase, Sacramento, and Marjorie Neill Helms, Grants Pass. -: ' - The story-, printed by , the Del Norte Triplicate, Crescent City, is "the essence of travel and transportation all over Oregon except along the Col umbia river," according to the authors. It describes the road from southern Oregon, especially the Jacksonville gold mining area, to the cosst. The coming of the auto and the Grants Pass-Crescent City stage are among topics. , , . Chessman Refused Rehearing by Court San Francisco (UPD . The California Supreme .Court on Wednesday refused to grant a rehearing to author-convict Caryl Chessman, the kidnap rapist who has , avoided the San " Quentin death chamber for 11 years. The high court will return the case Friday-to the trial court in Los Angeles county which is expected sometime next week to fix a new execu tion date for Chessman. Under normal procedures Chessman's new date with the gas chamber would be set sometime in the middle of Oc tober. - - " , Chessman, 38, has said that if denied a rehearing he would appeal to the U.S. Su preme Court and seek a stay of any new execution date. It would be the eighth time that he has- carried his cause to the highest tribunal. ' Magistrate Fines Himself on Charge . - Mismarck, N.D.-(UPB-A Bis marck polide magistrate fined himself $30 on a traffic charge recently and gave him self a thorough tongue-lashing besides. The magistrate, I. M. Oseth, arrested himself for careless driving after he drove his car partway through a red light. ' During a lecture to himself in the presence of the chief or police, he said, "The defend ant should be ashamed of him self and is." Oseth then completed the usual procedure in such traf fic violations he punched his drievr's license and sent a report of the incident to the stata patrol. The set, manufactured.by Hoffman Electronics, contains six speakersof TV sound and input jacks' into which an AMFM . tuner' or record changer can be plugged. The stereophonic sound sys tem faithfully reproduces ei ther monophonic or stereo recordings, engineers said, while claiming a minimum amount of room space. According to attending physicians, hers was only the eighth reported case of heart surgery done entirely under hypnosis. It consists of 510 hours of classroom in struction and 1,440 hours of clinical training. Registrations also are being taken for two-year courses in automotive mechanics arid in electronics. They will begin in September. The automotive course will include all phases of auto mechanics and the electronics course is designed to prepare persons for em ployment as highly " skilled technicians.
