Gaperna Continues I n NW Links Open; Congdon Has Lead Salem - (UPD - Medford pro Ron Caperna turned in a 74 Tuesday to make it iifto the 36-hole finals today of the. Northwest Open Golf cham pionships. . He carded a 72 Monday. Eight other golfers tied him at 146. Jim Sheldon, amateur from Medford, was eliminated on Tuesday. He shot a 76 to go with Monday's 74 for ar 150. The cutting-off place was 148. Salem - (UPD - Professional Chuck Condon of Tacoma, Wash., turned in a 70 Tues-' day to go with Monday's 66 and kept his lead in the 50th annual Northwest Open Golf tournament at Salem . Golf club. His 136 was four-under- par. ' Eddie Hogan of Portland, who tied Congdon Monday, carded a 74 Tuesday and dropped to an even-par 140. Las Vegas Man Dies Following Crash Redmond-IUPIKA Las Veeas. Nev., man, Garland G. Welch, 42, died Tuesday in Central Oregon District hospital here of injuries suffered in a traf fic accident in Wasco county near Shaniko Monday night. A passenger m Welch's car, Doris Williams Parker. 36. of Las Vegas, was injured. She was reported in satisfactory condition in the hospital. San Diego Even With Portlanders United Press International John Briggs hurled one-hit ball Tuesday night and the San Diego Padres evened their Pacific Coast league se ries with the Portland Bea vers 2-0. The win split the series at one game apiece and left Portland in second place, IV2 games behind Sacramen to. The hurler also scored one of the San Diego runs. Briggs chalked up his ninth victory against three losses. He never lost control and the Beavers never seriously threatened. George Brunet, who start ed for Portland, was tagged with the loss, his 10th versus four wins. The Padres picked up. five hits from him before he was relieved in the ninth by Glen McMinn. The Padres scored single runs in the fourth and last in nings. Dick Smith doubled in Briggs for the first tally and Steve Jankowski scored on an error by Clarence Moore. In other games, Vancouver and Sacramento split, with Vancouver winning 1-0 and Sacramento winning 4-3. Phoenix took Spokane 5-3 and Salt Lake downed Seat tle 5-1. Paraguay and Bolivia have no seacoasts. PERFORMS AT OPEN HOUSE-Andy Varipapa, above, na tionally known bowler, is the star performer today at the open house of Medford Bowling lanes. The event celebrates the expansion of the lanes from 22 to 38 alleys. Varipapa will appear in matches agains top Medford pinmen, will show his famed trick shot ability and will give tips on bowling. Alex May Turn Pro Next Year United Press International Indications are that tennis star Alex Olmedo will turn professional. But not until next Fall. Bob Barnes, the Australian manager for the Jack Kramer pro organization, said Olmedo has been made an offer. Barnes added that he doesn't expect the Davis cup star from Peru to reply until after the U.S. championships in September. An Australian sports writer Jack Pollard said Olmedo's guarantee is about $120,000. Salvador Olmedo, the fa ther of the tennis ace, pre dicted his son would remain an amateur until after the Da vis Cup matches later this month. Olmedo won two singles matches and was on the doubles team as the U.S. took the cup from Australia last December. YMCA Softball Team Winner Medford YMCA women's softball team evened the score for a previous loss by defeat ing Central Point 7 to 1 yes terday evening. Central Point had won a previous game 33 to 3. The Y team yesterday smacked out 11 hits while its pitcher, Bernice Ellis, was giv ing up only four. Medford tallied its first run in the fourth inning when Carol Rose socked a two-bagger. Three runs each went over in the sixth and seventh. Central Point gained its mark er in the fourth. The game completed the season for the, teams. CATLIN TRADED Cleveland (DPD Mlie Cleve land Browns of the National Football league have traded linebacker Tom Catlin to the Chicago Cardinals for a fu ture draft choice. The 27-year-old Catlin, a former Oklahoma star, was the Num ber One linebacker for Cleve land since he joined the club in 1954. On other pro football notes, Philadelphia asked waivers on two backs Rollie West of Villanova and Severn Hayes of Montana . . .
