It is possible that leukemia in man is sometimes due to a virus, just as it certainly is in some animals. The incidence of leukemia seems to be in creasing, but this may well be due to the fact that in the old days, in many cases, the disease was not diagnosed cor rectly. Some people today fear that the apparent increase in the incidence of leukemia is due to the increasing use of x-rays. but against this theory is the fact that some statistics on the illnesses and causes of death of x-ray men fail to show that they suffer more often from leukemia than other groups of men do. Quite a few mothers who have had a leukemic child write anxiously to ask if oth ers of their children are likely to get it. The answer is no. According to Dr. Arthur G. Durden, 29, wanted here on a bad check charge, has been arrested in Mobile, Ala., according to Medford police. Police said Durden's arrest by authorities in Mobile was reported Friday, one day after a warrant charging him with obtaining money under false pretenses was signed by Jack' son County District Judge E. Roy Bashaw. Bail is set at $1,500. The warrant followed a com plaint from officials of Serv ice, Unlimited, an employment agency here, alleging that Durden cashed a check for $203 on a non-existent bank. Durden. according to the ac count, said he needed the money to bring his family here from Reidsville, Ga. (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1959) CPRFPD Answers 56 Calls in July Central Point-The Central Point Rvral Fire Protection district last month received a total of 56 calls, setting a new record for the number of fires in an; one month, the department has reported. Last month's 56 calls com pares to 11 in July, 1958, and the previous high number of 30 fires in June, 1957. Since records were started, the greatest number of fires each year are 18 in July, 1954; 3 in June, 1955; 25 in August, 1956; 30 in June, 1957; and 27 in August, 1958. Last month's fires included 36 grass fires, two car fires, one hose house, freight car hot box, wood pile, wash shed, washer and dryer, a sawdust burner, a trailer house and a barn and hay fire. - , The department, which was formed in 1952, now has 20 volunteers and three paid personnel. It has two sta- tions, a central station just south of Central Point on Highway 99 and a substation at White City. Final Hearing Set for Bill Salem - A final hearing on proposed rules and regulations under the farm labor con tractor license law will be held in. the basement confer ence room, State Library Building, Salem, Oregon at 10, a.m. Aug. 20, 1959. aii interested persons are invited to submit their opin ions ana data orally or in writing on the requirement of liability insurance coverage for vehicles used by farm labor contractors to transport workers, on procedures and policies and on other matters in the proposal relative to reg ulation of farm labor contract ors. It is the intention of the Bureau of Labor to promul gate the proposal as rules, regulations and policies effec tive on Sept. 1 1959 subject to changes which may result from the public hearing. The Bureau of Labor plans to administer the proposed regulations during the remain ing few months of the 1959 migrant farm labor season and if experience indicates, a hearing may be called during the winter months prior to the 1960 season to resolve any problems which may arise. Copies of the proposal are being sent to individuals who have previously expressed an interest and to interested farm organizations, as well as cur rently licensed or registered contractors and crew leaders. The distribution and the other arrangements for the hearing are being made in accordance with the 1957 administrative procedures act governing pro mulgation of such rules and regulations.
