Family activity moves to the coolest part of the house or yard, and quicky meals are very much in order. It takes imagination to serve meals which require a mini mum of cooking heat and yet have the appeal to lift heat- jaded appetites. The beverage is important to all hot-weather meals . and the most exciting idea to make a splash in that field recently is "Soup on the Rocks," a good summertime, thirst- quencher. Delicious flavor and low calorie content make this one of the best coolers you can serve with meals or at any time of the day. To make Soup on the Rocks punch two holes in a can of beef broth. Place several ice cubes in a glass mug. Pour un diluted beef broth over ice cubes. Garnish- with lemon. One can makes two or three servings. - - ; WAwv. La Roche, left skirts at the midcalf, thus falling into step with very other designer in the Paris fall showings except Yves Mathieu Saint-Laurent who became the sensation of the season by decreeing nobble skirts and above-knee hemlines. La Roche also went along with the others of the Paris pack by showing suits with long jackets. Some had fur trimmed collars, one doubling as a hood. One hip-length jacket in lilac plaid had a button panel down the right side of the back to emphasize length. The models wore pale makeup, some of -them hard ly any lipstick, and wore high fur hats. A debate on the Dior hem line raged through Europe and in the United States al most as violently as the de bate over Christian Dior's "new look" of 1947 - a style condemned by many and worn by all. The Duchess f Windsor, perennially one of the world's 10 best dressed women, was reported in favor of Dior's "1960 look" though she did moan, "How will I get in and out of taxicabs?" If you were male and French the reaction was "ex cellent!" - If you were female with pretty legs the reaction was coy but - affirmative: "The short skirts are lovely - if you can afford to wear them."
