MAIL TRIBUNE, MHforJ, Or. Thursday, July 30, 19S9 5 In the Day's Hews r PRANK JENKINS 1 ? it i ! i I i ! s If j I ' 1 . ji'i 1 : I! i Progress notes on Nixon: He carries his "peace and friendship" message to No vosibirsk, deep in the heart of Russian Siberia, the so-called Wild West x.f the Soviet Union. Novosibirsk is 1,750 miles east of Moscow, and is . often described as the Chicago of Siberia. Not only that. His party was accompanied .by two other big Russian jets carrying foreign newsmen. This is undoubtedly the larg est number of foreign corre spondents ever to travel so far into the heart of Russia. When they get home, they can tell what they saw. ON SATURDAY night, Mr K (after the history mak inz sDatt turned over his coun try estate to the Nixons and -then Dlayed friendly host at a river cruise and a dinner for them. Mr. Nixon prevailed on Russian officials to permit Ad miral Hyman Rickover, Amer ica's crusty father of . the atomic-oowered submarine, to "see everything he wanted to see" in the Soviet s big nu- - clear - Dowered ice - breaker Rickover's statement that "it hasn't got anything we haven't got" was permitted to be sent out by the correspond ents without censorship. A ND so on- Our vice presi- dent seems to have been permitted to use on the Rus sians all his concededly great i talent for breaking down sus picion and ill will and build ing up admiration and good will. AS TO Mr. Nixon, let's not lay it on too thick. To do so would sound like political puffery. Paraphrasing Mark Antony's "Friends, Romans, and countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him," we can say we're not seeking at the mo- ment to elect Mr. Nixon Pres- ' ident of the United States We're-seeking to APPRAISE him. We're making up our minds as to just how good he is. What we want above ev erything else is an OBJEC TIVE look at him. These are too serious times for political puffery. We're looking for the TRUTH-about Mr. Nixon, and about the Rus sians. That's why the ac counts of ,the Nixon visit to Russia are getting such inten sive reading in America and throughout the western world. WE KNOW we mustn't per " mit the wool to be pulled over our eyes. - This is WAR we're in-even If it is cold war. Cold war can lead to hot war. Strategy is superimportant in war-wheth- er cold or hot. One of the ba sic purposes of strategy is to FOOL your enemy in the hope of getting him' into a state of false security in which you can hit him when he isn't looking and put him out of business. That may be what the Russians are aiming at now. Still- Let's watch what is going , on over there with interest - and not TOO MUCH cynicism -meanwhile keeping our " minds busy and our fingers crossed. These are dangerous times, and we need to learn everything we can learn about what is going on. As Mr. Nixon himself said the other day: "If we and the . Russians can't learn to LIVE together, we'll have to DIE together. Body of Three Year Old Found in Creek Pendleton-UP&-The body of John Paul Jacobsen, 3, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Jacobsen of Pendleton, was found in McKay creek about two miles south of here Wednesday aft ernoon, i . The boy had been missing since Wednesday morning and his body was recovered a few hundred yards from where he apparently toppled into the creek-which is running bank full with irrigation water. Sheriffs deputies, city, and state police, volunteers and skin divers all joined in the search for the boy. Three-Dimensional 'Paintings? Designed St. Louis-(Science Service)- Translucent three-dimensional "paintings" are being design ed from the plastics styrene and polyethylene. Developed by William Lang, director of design, Mon . santo Chemical company here, the forms are held in place in a frame by thin, almost invisi ble, threads of nylon. Lang gets the colors, textures, and patterns he desires by "throw ins things into the mixture a dash of contrasting color, or something to create air bub bles or streaks." zvrv Siwras Sugar I j The double-rich milk that whips I J I lUJlGIJIJ U IS (Si 9 -a7 Im-Mm IGacnip r- ' 1 1 1 n i r REG. 27c - HUNT'S Tomato Juice Made from Field Ripened Tomatoes 46-OZ.
