iV$. .i.:. Wr-.-' jw-U.... -;4 C:: , . .- MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Wednesday, July 29, 1959 -Aerial Pictures Help Engineers Syosset, N. Y.-flTO-Remem-"ber when civil engineers had r to slog across field and stream by foot, to map new highway i routes? .' : .'.Today, mountains and riv ers are measured in the twin " kling of a camera lens, thanks to photogrammetry, the tech nique of drawing contour maps from aerial photographs. "It used to take a month to come up with a map of a six or eight mile strip of pro posed highway, and the map showed a band only 500 feet wide," said Ford Bartlett, . president of the consulting engineer firm of Lockwood, Kessler and Bartlett, Inc. "Todav. with electronics and optics, the map can be produced in a week showing a strip 1,000 feet wide," he added. A major part of the photo- . grammetry technique in volves the stereoplotter. After aerial photographs are taken of a proposed highway route, the photos are fed into stereo- plotters, which produce a three-dimensional image on a plotting board. A skilled tech nician then traces over the image and comes up with con tour lines. From such calibrations, en-'-' eineers can obtain statistical information by feeding the data into electronic com puters. Of course, when double-checking is, required, en- gineers still must do some ground work. But they can - make this iob easier with the aid of a tellurometer, a com pact radar - like instrument that measures distance by the length of time it takes to send out and receive a microwave signal. This instrument, said Bartlett, can measure 40 miles in 40 minutes with a possi bility of . error, of only 11 inches. . '- The first silk mill estab lished in the United States ."was in Mansfield, Conn., in "' '' 1810. Power looms were intro duced in about 1838. Yale had the first course in geology in the U. S. in 1809. LEGAL NOTICES "NOTICE TO CREDITORS IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR THE COUNTY OF JACKSON PROBATE DEPARTMENT In the Matter of the Estate of JOHN R.
