14 MAIL TRIBUNE. Medford, Or. APPLEGATE VALLEY Wildcat Fight By MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley Just to see a wildcat would be a priv ilege for most people, but Paul Pearce saw two of them fighting in a tree about 100 yards from his house just off the Jacksonville - Ruch high way recently. The growling of the cats in a de d fir tree attracted Pearce's attention, and he was able to shoot the smaller cat as it came down. The animal was crippled and disappeared into the woods. Pearce called Floyd McKee of South Stage rd., who owns hunting hounds. McKee sent his son Richard and Fred Barnum, Medford, with the hound, and soon the wounded cat was located and killed. A dead fawn, partially eaten by the cats, was noticed nearby. The second wildcat that had engaged in the fight got away. Rural Reflections: Besides the soaring parakeet at Squaw lake, there are other unusual doings of pets in the lake area, including the un-descented skunk; belonging to Lee Ste- ver, Medford, a logger with temporary residence at the lake. Stever caught the young skunk and safely suspended him by the tail until he was over the notion ,of throwing perfume, his friends say. He was put in a box and proudly paraded around the resort without an accident. Stever, who also has five hound pupp in his menagerie, says ne once had an owl and a hawk in captivity, which made won derful pets. The conflict involves a BPA plan to construct a radio fa cility on top of the peak. The installation would aid BPA communications and main- tence crews; and the bureau of land management 'and FBI have expressed an interest in sharing the station! But the forest service wants to have the site withdrawn for purposes of recreation. A spokesman said any more fa cilities might "interfere with each other and conflict with recreation.'
