Portland is now two games of the pace with Vancouver and Sacramento in a deadlock for the top spot. George Freese, slugging Portland third sacker, regain ed his home-run hitting eye and smacked three out of the park Sunday, one in the first game and two in the second. - That gives him 16 for the season. Jim Greengrass also homer ed for Portland in the first game, his 17th of the season. Jensen Effective The Portland losing pitch ers were Tom Gorman in the opener and Glen McMinn in the second 'game. Larry Jan- sen relieved Gorman in the first game and pitched score less ball for six innings. Steve Jankowski, who hom ered in the first game, drove in the winning run in the sec ond. Despite injuries all season, Vancouver was back in a first place tie with Sacramento af ter downing Salt Lake City 3-2 and 5-4 Sunday. Sacramen to split with Seattle, losing 9-1 and winning 2-0. The Spokane-Phoenix game was rained out. . Pagliaroni Joins Injured The Mounties played Sun day without regular catcher Joe Pagliaroni, the newest member of Vancouvers ailing corps. The Mounties lost Joe Durham for the season last week when he was injured in an outfield collision. Earlier, Charlie White, a .291 hitting catcher last year, was also Four Records Beaten In All-Comers Finale Pedro Colley, Ashland, and Don Spinas, Medford, in the open class and Larry Holmes, Grants Pass, and Mike Hood, Medford, in the 17-18 year-old division smashed records Sat urday night as Medford's first series of summer track and field meets bowed out with , the All-Comers championship competition at the senior high ' stadium. Colley and Spinas and Phil Humphreys, Medford, in the open and Doyle Bransom, Central Point, and Hood in the prep class were double winners. Several others were victors in their events in both the open and 17-18 opposition in the fifth of the meets spon sored by "the Oregon AAU i Olympic Development pro gram and the City of Med ford parks and recreation de- partment. Colley captured the discus with a record heave of 138 feet 2 inches and also won the shot put in his class. Spinas : took both high and low open ' hurdles and " established a :15.3 standard in the highs. Hood duplicated the Spinas' effort with hurdle triumphs in the 17-18 class and a :15.6 j new mark in the highs. Holmes pole vaulted 12-3 for a prep division record and the height also took the open class blue ribbon Saturday. Humphreys took the broad jump in both classes and won the open 220-yard sprint. Ring Substitute Bouts This Week New York-(UPD-Two sub stitute lightweight fights will feature this week's boxing. Wednesday night, at Cleve land, lightweights Flash Elorde of the Philippines and unbeaten Solomon Boysaw of Cleveland meet in a nation ally televised (ABC) 10 rounder. Boysaw is favored at 7-5. The leather-tossers return to Madison Square Garden Friday night, after a six-week absence. That necessitated auj- stitute match Meanwhile, Wednesday night's original event was the return light heavyweight title fight between Champion Ar chie Moore and Canadian Won Durelle at Montreal; but a mastoid pperation on Moore's wife cause a two- week postponement, necessi tated the Elorde - Boysaw match for TV at Cleveland. Barry Shetrone hammered a pair of homers while Wes Stock pitched a three hitter to give the Mounties their 3-2 win over Salt Lake in the opening game. Shetrones blows came in the first and third innings off loser Dick Hanlon. Paliea Notches lOlh Erv Palica picked up his 10th victory of the season in the second game after being staked to a five run lead in the first inning. The Bees scored three times in the sev enth and Jim Baumer led off the ninth with a homer but the Bees could not close the gap Bob Mabe pitched a three hitter for Seattle in the open er against the Solons. Lou Skias belted a two run homer in the first and the Rainiers coasted in from there while collecting 12 hits in all of three Solon hurlers. Joe Stan ka, Sacramento's ace, was charged with the loss. He's now 12-7. Carl Greene gave the So lon's their first place tie with a four-hit shutout in the sec ond tilt. Bob Roselli homered for the Sacs in the third and the Solons added another run in the fourth. Dave Stenhouse was the loser, though he and two other Rainier hurlers gave up only two hits in the seven inning contest. Padres Bounce Back The Padres, who played the worst ball in the league dur ing the past month and a half, showed their early season form in taking the twin-bill from Portland. Carl Thomas went the route in the first game giving up seven - hits while his mates pushed over all six of their tallies in the first three inn ings. Steve Jankowski belted a two run homer in the Padres' second. George Freese and Jim Greengrass homered for the Beavers. Jankowski singled home the winning tally in the night cap. Player Selection Made for Star Mix Boston-(UPD-Manager Casey Stengel today named three new pitchers and three more outfielders to the American league squad for the second AH-Star game at Los Angeles Aug. 3. . Stengel was allowed to raise the squad limit from 25 to 28 for the game to be played at the Los Angeles coliseum. Fred Haney, mana ger of the National league squad, also will have three additional players, available for the second game. Lewiston won the first game when the Chiefs pushed across six runs in the fourth inning and went on t6 win 11-8. The inning featured a two-run. homer by Duke Du cote. Gary Rushing had a home run, single and double to lead Lewiston to its first-game win. Rushing batted in five runs. Salem, Eugene Divide ' In other action Yakima beat Tri-City 9-6 while Salem and Eugene divided a double bill. Eugene .won the opener 3-2 and Salem won the nightcap 6-2. . Bob Bolin, the league's strikeout leader, threw a five- hitter at Salem in the Senator- Emerald first game for his 13th win in 18 decisions. He struck out eight and walked seven. Eugene won it on a two-run homer by Mel Krause in the seventh inning. Chuck Hiller hit a homer in the fourth in ning with one on. Salem won the second game on the strength of a four-run fifth inning.
