Resugeht Braves Nab Four in low; Yanks, Nine Tiffs Off, May Be Gone By FRED DOWN United Press International The Braves are coming and the Yankees may be gone. That's the trend of the pen nant races today as the strain ing defending champions struggle to organize late -season drives. It looks like the Braves are going to make a fight of it. But there's no sign that the Yankees can snap out of the coma that now has them drifting out of the race. The Braves, bouncing back from a seven-game losing streak, ran their winning streak to four games Sunday when they beat the Pitts- Pirates, 4-0 and 2-1. They're now only two percentage points behind second-place Los Angeles and two games behind first-place San Francisco. The Yankees, meanwhile suffered a 1-0 loss to Frank Lary and the Detroit Tigers and fell one game below .500, nine games behind the Cleveland Indians, who took over first place with a 9-0 and 4-3 sweep of the Wash ington Senators. Cubs Drop Giants The Chicago Cubs scored a 7-3 victory over the Giants, the Dodgers whipped the St Louis Cardinals, 8-2, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the SIPdDMlfS Giants Play In Portland Portland-(UPD-The Portland Beavers, two games off the pace in the Pacific Coast League, clash with the first place San Francisco Giants of the National League in an ex hibition game here tonight. The Beavers, who dropped a twin bill to San Diego Sun day, make a special trip home for the game. They open a series Tuesday at Sacramento San Francisco was to fly into town today at 12:30 p.m. with a parade slated in the Giants' honor. A crowd of more than 20,- 000 was expected. The Beavers will use Marty Kutyna, one of their front lint hurlers, in an effort to knock off the Giants. San Francisco is expected to start right-hander Alan Worthing ton with Eddie Fisher in reserve. MacKay Seems Back in Form Haverford, Pa.-IUPD-The re turn to top form of Barry MacKay sent American Davis Cup tennis hopes soaring to day despite the latest defeat 'suffered by Alex Olmedo. MacKay, on leave from the u. a. In the finals he beat Ian Vermaak of South Africa, 9-7, 10-8, 6-0. The game by outgunned Vermaak" thus failed in an ef fort to give South Africa a sweep of singles titles here. Sandra Reynolds, women's champion of South Africa, beat her countrywoman Renee Schuurman in the women's final, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Rawls, Hanson Share in Lead Chicago -flIPD- Betsy Rawls and Beverly Hanson went into the final round of Mt. Pros pect Country club's $20,000 women's open tournament to day, tied for first place at a torrid 13 strokes under par. Miss Rawls, the Spartan burg, S. C, top money-winner in ladies pro golf, and the veteran Miss Hanson, of Indio, Calif., took the lead Sunday when early pacemaker Mic key Wright shot over-par golf. Miss Hanson fired a three-under-par 71 and Miss Rawls, who set a course record Sat urday with a 69, shot a 73 to tie in first .place at a 54-hole total of 219. Miss Wright, who shot two sixes Sunday for an 18-hole total of 75, slipped to a third place tie with Louise Suggs, who shot a 74 for a tourna ment total of 220. Art Dit mar matched zeroes with the Alabama bulldog for nine, in nings but the Tigers won in the 10th. Banks Slams Homer Ernie Banks hit a two-run homer and pitcher Bob An derson singled home two runs for the Cubs who dealt San Francisco's Miha McCor mick his eighth defeat. Don Drysdale pitched a seven-hitter and hit a two-run homer as he won his 13th game for the Dodgers. Jerry Lynch and Willie Jones hit homers to spark an eight-hit attack that brought Brooks Lawrence his sixth win but then Gene Conley pitched for his ninth triumph to earn the Phillies a split. Rookie Jim Perry pitched a two-hitter and Woodie Held hit two homers for the In dians in the first game and the Tribe won the 12 inning night cap when Minnie Min- oso doubled and scored on Jim Baxes' single. Early Wynn pitched a two hitter to run the White Sox's winning streak to five games but then Milt Pappas turned in a five-hitter that snapped the Orioles' losing streak at six games. Harry Chitti snapped a 4-4 tie with a homer in the eighth inning as Kansas City's Ray Herbert won his 10th game. C-TOPD-Otis Davis of the University of Oregon won the 440 and the 220 yard dashes in the Cale donian Track and Field Games Saturday. Davis time was 21.6 in the 220 and 47.2 in the 440.
