Research Told For Douglas Fir Forests McMinnville - Linfield Re search Institute on the Lin field college campus here has received a two-year grant of $15,200 from the National Science Foundation to support research concerning "biotic succession in a Douglas fir forest." Research, which will be under- the direction of Dr. Jane C. Dirks -Edmunds, associate professor of biology at Lin field college, will be on Sad dleback mountain in the coast range in the northeast corner of Lincoln county. Whether Saddleback moun tain possesses the conditions for the regeneration of a coni ferous forest, and whether again in the future a harvest of trees will be possible there, are questions which ecologi cal studies such as this one being undertaken by LRI can answer. Dr. W. P. Dyke, LRI direct or, explains that in a Douglas fir logging area more must be learned about the effects of logging on . the land, the length of time it takes for a forest to grow back, under -various conditions, after log ging or a fire, and what can be done to assist natural pro cesses. Hearing Tuesday on Air Route to Calgary Civic witnesses from at least 16 Washington, Oregon and Idaho communities will appear at a Civil Aeronautics Board hearing in Spokane to morrow in support of West Coast Airlines' application to serve Calgary on a new inter- - national route from Spokane, the Seattle based regional carrier announced today. The new route is one of a number of international air links worked out recently in Ottawa in 'an agreement be tween the United States and Canada. Both West Coast and Northwest Airlines have ap plied for the route, which also may be served by one or. more Canadian airlines. Calgary, only 286 air miles from Spokane, Is 462 miles away by highway. The pres ent air connections now re quired 7 hours and 20 min utes, . including layover, by way of Great Falls, Mont. The civic group representa tive from other communities will also appear in support of the need for such service, but will name no individual car rier, it was reported. Rare Wax Gives Shine To Shoes New York -(DPD One of the world's most expensive and rarest waxes and one of the most difficult to obtain is largely responsible for the shine in your shoeshine. It's called carnauba wax; it comes from a tree called the carnauba palm; and it's found only one place in the world: Brazil. According to researchers at the Esquire Boot Polish Lab oratories, the palms must be at least 10 years old before any wax can be obtained from them and only 20 leaves are cut from each tree annually. The leaves are then dried in the sun three or four days and taken to a special room where they are beaten to dislodge wax, which comes off in a fine powder that is melted in a vat, strained through a cloth and allowed to cool. Each tree yields only about three and a half ounces of the stuff an nually. Ships' Graveyard Being Cleaned Out Oakland, Calif. UPD A graveyard of sunken ships here is being cleared out to make way for an ulta-modern .recreational boating center. Dredges cleaning up the harbor have scooped up a va riety of ..moss-covered hulks that had been towed into the protected cove of the Alameda Estuary off San Francisco Bay. " Although none of the ships was. identified, they were be lieved to be of the windjam mer type that brought '49'ers around the Horn to the Cali fornia gold" fields. " The first unit of the $2,500, 000 boating center, known as the Pacific Marina, was opened early in May. Between five and six mil lion U.S. flags are usually produced each year, according to the National Geographical Magazine, although the figure is running about 20 per cent higher in 1959. The U.S. Post Office collects almost 300. million dollars a year for delivering business mail. . The altitude record for a manned balloon was set on Nov. 8, 1956, by Navy Lt. Cmdrs. Malcolm D. Ross and M. Lee Lewis when they rode to 76,000 feet in a pressurized aluminum, gondola. The Army did not officially adopt the United States flag until half a century after the American Revolution.
