Landing Gear
Inspection of
707s Ordered
Washington TOPD The Fed
eral Aviation Agency has
ordered minute inspection of
landing gears on all Boeing
707 jet-liners in a move to
halt the faulty gear incidents
that have plagued the giant
planes recently.
FAA also told the four air
lines operating the big jets -American,
Trans World, Pan
American and Continental
to install new hydraulic fluid
pumps or modify the hydraul
ic systems on certain earlier
models of the 707.
The latter order included
the three 707s delivered to
the Air Force for use by
White House and other top
government officials. Vice
President Richard M. Nixon
used one of these planes on
his trip to Moscow.
Ordered 'Soon'
The inspection order affects
all 707s. FAA told the airlines
to carry out the inspection "as
soon as possible. The inspec
tion must be completed be
fore each aircraft completes
another 10 hours of flight.
If inspection shows impact
dents on the landing gear
truck beam exceeding 0.005ths
of an inch, FAA said, the
beams must be replaced. The
directive also requires contin
ued inspection of landing gear
comnonents after every 60
hours of service.
Installation of new hydraul
ic pumps or modification of
the present system on the
earlier 707s must be complet
ed by Aug. 21, the FAA order
said.

ship USS Colorado, a veteran
of 10 major Pacific invasions
against the Japanese during
World War II, has been towed
into the Todd shipyard dry
dock here to be scrapped.
The Lerner Co. of Oakland,
Calif., paid the federal gov
ernment $611,777 for the ves
sel, which cost $27 million to
build. The 36-year-old Colo
rado has been in the mothball
fleet at the Puget Sound Nav
al Shipyard in Bremerton
since 1946.

Reynolds Vetoes
USW Wage Plan

nolds Metals Company has
joined the other two big alum
inum producers in rejecting
a United Steelworkers Union
wage increase proposal.
The Aluminum Company of
America, Kaiser Aluminum
and Chemical Corp., and Rey
nolds are in negotiations with
the union on a new contract
to replace the one which ex
pires July 31.
Alcoa and Kaiser rejected
the steelworkers proposal for
a 15-cent an hour wage pack
age increase Wednesday.
With the strike deadline
only a week away, the alumi
num companies were present
ing a solid front and there
was no sign of a break.
The steel union, at its con
ference with Alcoa this morn
ing, presented an economic
report giving figures and data
to support its contention that
Alcoa could afford a wage in
crease. The. company made no
