SOTA officials announced that there is a special class for matic transmissions, and a to tal of six sports car classes. In all. there will be competition in ome 25 classes in today's races. Entrants weie again cau tioned about being required to have safety slfields around their bell housings. The only vehicles not required to have . this safety feature are stock cars and sport vehicles with engine displacement less than 2,700 cubic centimeters. Today's time trials . will open one hour earlier, at 9 a.m., to give contestants ad ditional time to tune their ve hicles before the afternoon eliminations. The drag strip is located seven miles north of Medford off the Crater .Lake highway. Boston was at Kansas City in a night game. Jim Tatum Given Burial Chapel" Hill. N. C.-(CPD-Jim Tatum was laid to rest Saturday practically within punting distance of where he was preparing lo lead . North Carolina's football "team to one of its biggest years,? ' Many of Talum's friends, still stunned by his untime ly death at the age of 45 last Thursday, were in the funeral procession which filed down a flowery path to pay their r last respects." The North Carolina coach died of a virus ailment. Among the leading sports figures present were Coach ' Bear Bryant of Alabama, Coach Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma and North Caro lina's grand old man of ath letics, Robert Fetzer. The .Rev. Charles Hub bard, classmate of Tatum when the two were students at North Carolina, offered a brief graveside prayer. Nearby were Tatum's oldest daughter Rebecca, 14, and his son, James Jr.. 13. The youngest child, Edna Raid. 7, did not attend the fu neral. ' Tatum's wife remains in the hospital with a : virus infection and was unable to . attend '' her husband's funeral. (UPD The San Francisco Forty Niners received their first jolt of the season Saturday with the an nouncement that Hillard Hill, drafted from the University of Southern California, would be unable to play" this year because of a hernia. The six-foot, three-inch, 198 pound star flunked his physi cal examination Saturday but 28 other rookies and 16 vet erans made it through with flying colbrs. The Forty Niners had draft ed Hill as a "redshirt" in the" winter of 1958. He made hon orable mention on the UPI's allcoast football team last year. The Forty Niners will put him on .the reserve list. Coach Howard (Red) Hick ey, who has taken over the reins from Frank Albert, said the club would start working out on a twice-a-day basis to day. Hickey added he was heartened over the fact that he had seven rookie linemen on hand who scale over 250 pounds. Jack Hays, another rookie from Trinity of Texas, was scheduled to check in today. Wenatchee 0 Need for Hospital To Be Presented Ashland - The need - for a new hospital in Ashland will be presented to the hospital advisory committee of the state board' of health Aug. 4, Arnold Bauder, chairman of the Ashland hospital commit tee, has announced. The committtee will also seek Hill-Burton funds to help build the new hospital. The hospital advisory com mittee hears all requests for federal funds and it submits its recommendation to the state board of health, which allocates Hill-Burton funds available for hospital con struction in Oregon. ' j : The local .committee has been meeting to discuss local needs and has conferred with architects on the cost of mod ernization of the present hos pital as well as the cost of constructing a new one. , St. ' Catharines, Ont. - (UPD -Magistrate Harley Hallett ruled William Sharpe's "un safe vehicle" off the road and fined the motorist $14.50. Of ficers who arrested Sharpe, 20, said the auto he was drivr ing was "held together with baling wire, there were blocks of wood supporting the fan belt and the grill and hood were put together from two different makes of cars."
