Miteff Bout 1 Is Next For Alonzo Louisville-flJPD-Alonzo John son, a young man from Penn sylvania who cut his eye teeth on a ring rope, today was ready to take on Argentine heavyweight Alex Miteff aft er, spoiling Willie Pastrano's comebackhopes by winning a unanimous decision. . Subbing for Miteff, the for mer barber from Braddock, Pa., stalke " the Miami, Fla., boxer for most of - the 10 rounds Friday night and rang up an impressive, if close, de cision by shrugging off Pas trano's fast punching. Neither fighter was ever down in the nationally tele vised bout. f Disappointment The win by the better-con ditioned Johnson, ranked sev enth by the NBA, was his 13th straight and ran his rec ord to 18-1. For Pastrona, now ranked eighth by Ring Maga zine, it was another . disap pointment in his comeback at tempts. Johnson, a fixture in gyms at the tender age of 12 but who fidn't get serious about swapping leather until his early teens, will meet Miteff in New York's Madison Square Garden, Aug. 14. Beavers Nip Padres 5-4 San Diego, Calif. -UPD-Vet-eran Art Houtteman came on in relief Saturday to preserve a 5-4 Portland Beaver win over the San Diego Padres in Pacific Coalst league play. With one run in, and the tying and winning runs on the bases, the former Detroit ace got Don Dillard to fly out to end the game. Houtteman entered the game in the seventh, when San Diego got a run. Charlie Seacrest scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the ninth. He reached' base on a fielder's choice, advanced on an infield out and George Freese chased him home with a single. " Portland's big inning was the fourth when the Beavers scored three times. The runs come when Nini Tornay walk ed and Jim Greengrass sin gled. Jim Westlake walked Milt Graff following with a ' safety to push across two baserunners. Clarence Moore singled in Westlake. San Diego got two of its runs in the first with two out. The Padres got single runs in the seventh and ninth. In the ninth-inning rally, Billy Hun ter doubled, moved to third on Steve Jankowski's infield single and scored when Dick Smith singled. Stratford, Conn., Raybestos Brakettes, 1958 winners of the Women's World Softball tournament, will have top bill ing in the evening double header. They will meet the popular Rogue Valley Dairy Maids in one conflict and Port land's Erv Lind Florists in "the other. Rogue Valley is the reign ing champion among Oregon teams outside of Portland. The Florists took the Pacific north west mantle last year, qualify ing1 for the world tournament but not making the trip to Stratford. Erv Lind's team rates as one of the best in the country. Some of the finest ladies Softball players in the United States are on the Brakette and Florist squads. A pitching duel between Bertha Ragan and Louise Mazzuca is antici pated in the fracas between thos. two teams. Ragan recorded 24 victories and no losses last year and pitched four victories for the Bakettes in the world tourna ment. During the 1958 season she had 19 shutouts, five of them no-hitters. Mazzuca, only Lightweight Challenges Basilio Muskegon, Mich.-flJPD-Ken- ny Lane, one of the nation's top-ranked lightweight con tenders, awaited reaction to day to. hi? challenge to fight Carmen Basilio, a middle weight, in an old-fashioned battle. In a radio interview with WMUS sports editor Wes Te beau Friday night Lane pro posed t battle Basilio in a fight to the finish. He sug gested a no time limit, no weight limit scrap, provided a $100,000 guarantee was of fered. Lane suggested Tijuana, Mexico, as a likely site for the old-time fisticuffs session and said fight fans throughout the country would flock to see such a battle. Basilio, who recently signed to fight for the NBA version of the middleweight crown on the west coast, did not com ment immediately on the chal lenge. She won 14 and lost two games last year and was named most valuable pitcher in the regional tourna ment. Mickey Macchietoo, Raybes tos catcher, was named to the world all-star team and Mary Hartman, leftfielder, Brenda Reilly, all-around player, Ma rie Ottaviano, third base, Bev erly Conners, utility infield er, and Joan Joyce, are among other outstanding Brakette players, Among the Florists, Marg aret Dobson, third base, Bev Wadsworth, catcher, and Hap Piper, outfielder, have been named All-Americans, Dobson five times. Liz Locke, outfield er,, took the outstanding play er award in the 1952 Nation al -Softball congress world tournament. Delores Price, another outfielder, has gained a national tournament leading hitter award. The Brakettes in the 11-year period, 1957 through 1958 compiled a standout record of 378 victories against 76 losses Raybestos has numerous league and regional titles and in 1956 was world tournament semi-finalists. Portland's Florist's are no stanger sto national ' laurels. They won the American Soft ball association world toga in 1944 and the National Softball Congress diadem in 1953. In their world tourney rivalry, they have always placed among the top five teams. Org anized in 1937, the Lind club has won every city, state and reigonal meet in which it has competed. The Brackette twirler compiled a tremendous record of 24 victories and no losses last year. She allowed just 10 runs and 48 hits in 202 in nings. Ragan during 1958 struck out 297 batters and walked just 22. She had five no-hit, no-run games, 19 shutouts and a string of 76 scoreless innings. In the world tourney last year she won four of her team's six games; chucking 45 13 innings and permitting just one earned run. South African Scores Upset Haverford, Pa. (DPD Ian Vermaak of South Africa up set .top-seeded" Alex Olmedo and defending champion Barry McKay beat Ramana than Krishnan of India to move into the finals of the 60th Pennsylvania lawn ten nis championship at the Mer ion cricket club Saturday. The list, made public Fri day by Chairman Estes Ke f a u v e r (D-Tenn.), includes Mark Set By Swimmer Osaka, Japan -(DPD- Frank McKinney set a' world record for the 200-meter backstroke and Alan Somers swam the fastest 1,500-meter freestyle race of 1959 Saturday night to give the United States an 18-17 lead over Japan at the halfway mark in a dual swim ming meet. McKinney, 20, a lanky Uni versity of Indiana student, won the 200-meter backstroke event in . two minutes, 17.8 seconds. He clipped one-tenth of' a second off the mark of 2:17.9 he set July 12 during the United States swimming championships at Los Altos, Calif. The listed record of 2:18.4 was set by John Monck ton of Australia in 1958. The crowd gave McKinney an ovation when he finished at the 50-meter outdoor O JI pooL But Somers, 17, a re cent graduate of Indianapolis, Ind., Tech High school, really stole the show while the Am ericans won five of Saturday night's seven events. Somers, leading all the way, upset Murray Rose of Austral ia and Japan's Tsuyoshi Ya manaka in the 1,500-meter freestyle race. Somers' time of 17 minutes, 44.4 seconds was the fastest produced in the event this year. John Kon rads of Australia set the world . mark of 17:28.7 last year. The meet will end with sev en more events Sunday night. The Japanese swimmers scor ed a 41-38 victory over the U.S. stars at Tokyo.
