RICHARD NOKXS City Editor, Tha Orrooniaa I m pleased to report that Satan and I got along fine. It was with considerable mis giving that I threw one leg over the back of Satan and 'rode into the sunset. - The last time I had been astride a horse was when I was pitched off on my head at the tender age of 10 by Old Ned, who long since has gone to horse heaven. In fact, I was pretty "comae ci, eomme ca" about the whole business of going to a dude ranch on an Oregon State Mo tor Assn. motorlog this spring, but when I mentioned the pos sibility to my family,-1 was bowled over by the enthusastie response. Seeoodary Reads Used So it was we drove the white Ford from Portland to Pendle ton after work one day and began following the secondary roads on a still hunt fof the Bar-M Ranch, well up the Um atilla River in the Blue Moun tains. After a couple of false starts and wrong turns w made it, well after chow had gone down for other visitors at the ranch. But late though it was, Howard Baker, headman of the spread, welcomed us with hot coffee and food and a real hearty western "howdy." Mostly, at a dude ranch such as the Bar-M,-there are horses. The Bar-M boasts not only the eold waters of the Uma tilla River in which fish abound, but right alongside that stream is a swimming pool fed by Bingham .Hot Springs which keep the water at 72 degrees. One branch of the Umatilla has been dammed to form a lake for boating; swings, ta ble tennis, games (including one called Ring-a-Pole invented by our host, Howard Baker), dancing, hiking, volley ball and studying the history of the area are some of the more popular activities. Then, of course, there is eating. Three times a day we sat down to about as big a table of food as served to lumber jacks. The kitchen crew, h e a d e d by Bonnie (Mrs. Howard) Baker, is accustomed to big appetites whetted by all the outdoor activity. Take breakfast, for example: Stewed prunes are a starter followed by oatmeal mush', omelet, ba con, sweet rolls and all the milk, chocolate or coffee 'you want to drink. The other meals are in the same manner, with steaks a fixture once a day. The principal building at the Bar-M is called Stage Coach Inn because way back in Civil War days it was built for that purpose. The morning ride went up the side of a hill where the view of the valley floor where lies the Bar-M is superb. This was taken at a walk while the greenhorns got used to the sad dle. The afternoon ridewas for the better horsemen who want to gallop, and this was over the trails in the valley along the Umatilla River. To Evelvn went the gentle steed Hesitation, but to the head of the Nokes clan went fiery Satan. It was with some trepidation that we set out.
