McKay's Eyes
Help Others See
Salem-flJPD-Douglas McKay's
concern for his fellow men
exerted its influence beyond
his death and as a result,
two persons again could see
with both eyes today.
McKay, ex-Secretary of In
terior and former governor
of Oregon whose friends said
his chief concern had always
been for his fellow men,- had
specified that his eyes should
go to the Good Samaritan hos
pital eye bank in Portland.
Arrangements for use of his
eyes were made, and after his
death here Wednesday; the
eyes were removed and rush
ed to Portland. As soon as
they arrived, the corneas were
removed and transplanted in
two "persons, each of whom
had one bad eye. As a result
of the transplants, full vision
was restored to each of them.
- Mrs. Mabel McKay said she
thought it would be a "won
derful thing" for her husband
to donate his eyes." She said
the decision was made last
January after she and McKay
had investigated an eye resto
ration bank . in New .York
