The Sacramento Solons ap

the lack of a power hitter
keep them out of first place
in the Pacific Coast league.
The Solons, who have re
cently shown signs of fading
out of the pennant picture,
displayed some unmistakable
earmarks of a flag winner
(Thursday night.
They cooled off the red-hot
Salt Lake City Bees, 4-2, as
Joe Stanka nailed down his
11th win of the season. He got
relief help from Terry Fox,
the Sacs' ace bull-penner who
has a 7-0 season record.
The win kept the Solons a
game and a half ahead of the
second place Vancouver
Mounties, who nipped Seattle
1-0. Other games saw Phoenix
take San Diego, 6-1, and Port
land defeat Spokane, 3-1.
Still Searching
Sacramento's front office is

stretch. Meanwhile, they will
have to be content with get

turn 10-round match between
Dick Tiger of Nigeria and
Rory Calhoun of White Plains,
N. Y.
But if the two promising
middleweights put on a show
as good as their first encoun
ter six weeks ago in New
York, few viewers will com
plain. - The two boxed 10 exciting
rounds in Madison Square
Garden June 5. The fight, the
first in this country for Tiger,
ended in a draw when Cal
houn made a strong comeback

- Tiger, British Empire mid
dleweight titleholder, had the
edge over the 24-year-old Cal
houn according to a poll of
sportswriters covering the
fight even on rounds and
points while another gave the
edge to Calhoun and the third
said Tiger won.

Spokane opened the scoring
in the third inning when Grob,
who had walked went te
second on a sacrifice bunt by
Tommy Davis and to third on
a passed ball and then scored
when Tony Roig hit a sacrifice
fly.
The Beavers evened the
score in the bottom of the
sixth when Freese singled to
left, advanced to second on
Nini Tornay's sacrifice, went
to third on a force out and
scored when Roig threw the
ball away attempting to get
Dave Melton at first.

Sports Cars
To Vie Here
On Sunday
The second annual Cal-Ore
sports car rally to be held
here has been announced for
Sunday noon at the drag strip
near Camp White. The rally
will feature a concourse d'el-
egance - ,the "style show" of
sports cars - and , an auto
cross, or race against time.
About -60 cars are expected
to compete. The sleek vehi
cles will be arriving all day
Saturday from their home
clubs in Redding, Eureka,
Crescent City, Klamath Falls,
Eugene and Ukiah.
They'll be clocked for av
erage time from their points
of departure.
A banquet has been sched
uled for Saturday night in the
Rogue Valley Country club.
The concourse will begin
at 10 a.m. Sunday at the drag
strip, to be followed by the
auto cross. The auto cross isn't
the traditional road race af
fair, but rather a race against
the clock.
Hogland Quits

Thursday he is quitting pro
fessional football.
Hogland a resident of
Bend, Ore., said he is not re
turning to the Chicago Cardi
nals this year, .
Hogland gave no plans for
the immediate future but said
he might be interested in a
high school or college coach
ing position.
An estimated 62 million
acres of land now planted to
crops in the United States is
said to be completely safe
from erosion losses.

That series' slice merely
whetted Dusty's appetite, so
here he is again five years
later putting in his bid with
the Giants for a second help

Remember those amazing
pinch hits he collected to lead
the Giants to the National
league pennant in 1954?
Well, Rhodes is doing busi
ness at the same old stand
in an effort to bring the Gi
ants their-first pennant since
then this year.
. Dusty, who was recalled
from the minors only a short
time back, kept the Giants on
top Thursday night when he
came through with one of his
patented pinch hits in the
ninth inning to beat the Phil
lies, 1-0, in the second game
of a twi-night doubleheader.
Giants Needed Win '
The Giants needed that vic
tory to remain one game
ahead of the idle second-place
Dodgers because the Phillies
had taken the opener, 6-4, be
hind Robin Roberts.
Southpaw Johnny Anto-
nelli pitched superbly in gain
ing his 14th victory, giving
up only three hits while
striking out nine.
In the opener, the Phils
knocked out former teammate
Jack Sanford with a two-run
rally in the seventh that broke
a 4-4 tie.
The Cubs defeated the
Braves for the third straight
time, 4-2, and the Reds down
ed the Cardinals, 7-5. Los An
geles and Pittsburgh were not
scheduled.
Chicago Grabs Lead
The White Sox took over
the American. League lead by
one game by splitting a dou
bleheader with the Red Sox
while the Yankees were tak
ing a twin-bill from the In
dians. Chicago beat Boston in
the opener, 4-3, and Boston
won the second game. 5-4.
The Yankees won their open
er from the Indians, 7-5, in
10 innings and the nightcap,
4-0. Washington licked De
troit, 5-2, and Kansas City
nipped Baltimore, 4-3.
Dave Hillman of the Cubs,
who had lost five straight
games to the Braves during
his career, beat them for the
first time with a nine-hit ef
fort. The Cubs collected all
their runs on five hits, includ
ing Ernie Banks' 27th homer,
off Lew Burdette.
Jerry Lynch drove in four
runs with a homer and three
singles to pace the Reds to
their victory over the Car
dinals. Keough Scores
Vic Wertz' third hit of the
game, a single, scored Marty
Keough from second . base
with the run that broke a 4-4
tie in the seventh inning and
gave the Red Sox their night
cap victory over the White
Sox. Sherm Lollar doubled

-Mickey Mantle's 19th hom
er with one on in the 10th
inning gave the Yankees their
opening . game victory over
the Indians after Yogi Berra
tied the score with his 11th
homer in the ninth. Little
Bobby Shantz, promoted to a
starting role from the bull
pen because Casey Stengel
had nobody else, stopped the
Tribe on five hits in the night
cap to give the Yanks their
first doubleheader sweep
since May 30.
The Senators handed the
slumping Tigers their fourth
straight defeat and 11th loss
in their last 13 games. Bill
Fischer registered his eighth
victory with relief help from
Dick Hyde.
Tom Sturdivant hurled four
innings of hitless ball in re
lief of Bud Daley as the Ath
letics topped the Orioles.
Daley, credited with his ninth
victory, had a shutout until
the sixth when Walt Dropo
hit a two-run homer and Gus
Triandos belted his 22nd hom
er with the bases empty. .

Junior Golf At Club To Begin

winner of last year's Boys'
division, moves up to the Ju
nior competition to' try for
the trophy in the Southern
Oregon Junior Golf Cham
pionship to be held Monday
and Tuesday at Rogue Valley
Country club.
Treasure Sullivan of Ash
land will return to defend
her first place crown in the
Junior Girls' division.
The tournament, open to
those under 17 years, begins
Monday morning, with 18
holes of golf scheduled for
the day. Eighteen will follow
on Tuesday to make a total
of 36 holes.
Stroke play is used in scor
ing, no handicap, and the low
score is the winner. An entry
fee of $2.50 will include
lunch on Monday. Trophies
will be given for the first
three places in all divisions..
