Mtifori, Or. Thursday, July 16, 1959 Russia Tests Live Polio Vaccine on 4 Million Persons Washington-(Science Serv-Ice)-More than 4,000,000 Rus sians have gulped down. In one form of another, a live virus that is capable of pre venting paralytic polio. The live virus vaccine used in Russia is an offspring of the live polio virus develofoed by Dr. Albert Sabin of the University of Cincinnati. Many of these Russians have already received the Salk vaccine which contains killed virus. Others have re ceived either the one vaccine or the other. Antibodies Level Goes Up When a Derson receives thm Salk vaccine, his body builds up a certain level of Immunity to polio. Then, when he re- ceives a dose of the live virus. the level of antibodies shoots even higher. To date, few such tests have ben carried out in the United States be cause some scientists felt that the immunizing effect of the live virus would not be evi dent due to the mass inocula tion of Salk vaccine. One question would remain unanswered in the event of a polio epidemic in an area where persons had received both vaccines. It would be im possible to determine which vaccine prevented the polio from crippling the vaccinated. San Diego Ideal For Boating Fans San Diego, Calif UPD-Thou-sands of acres of protected water and a mild climate com bine to make this southern California seaport city one of the nation's most ideal spots for boating enthusiasts. There are more than 12,000 pleasure boats registered here and private ownership is in creasing at the rate of 100 boats a week, making San Diego what one might call a boat in every garage" city. -San Diego Harbor, dotted with hundreds of naval and commercial vessels, and Mis sion Bay, now being develop ed as the nation's outstanding aquatic park, provide facili ties to handle everything from paddleboards to ocean-going yachts. The center of boating acti vities in San Diego Bay, a boot-shaped harbor containing 25 miles of navigable waters, is Shelter Island, a man-made peninsula providing ample car and boat-trailer parking fa cilities as well as launching ramps. And it's free. Shelter Island will be even more attractive this summer with completion of a new ma rina, complete with slips for 135 boats of all sizes up to 115 feet and every service needed by visiting yachtsmen from showers to restaurant. Air Conditioning Benefits Patients New Orleans-fflPD-A study at Charity hospital here show ed that most patients "wera greatly benefited by air con- ditioning," which was "par ticularly important for the patient with heart disease." Benjamin R. Ebersman, president of a firm (Mathes Co.) which manufactures air conditioning equipment, said the study included 88 patients in an air-conditioned ward and 75 in a ward that wasn't. Ebersman said "air condi tioning eliminated sweating, fostered a calm and quiet at mosphere, improved morale of both patients and attending personnel, removed allergens from the environment and in creased the tolerance of en forced bed rest." As for cardiac patients. Eb ersman said the heart did not have to work as hard in an air-conditioned room as it did when the atmosphere was warm and humid. About 28 per cent of fabrics used in the U.S. today are of man-made fibers.
