July 13. 19SS Brakeless Bus Loaded With Boys Takes Wild Run r Arcadia, Calif .-OT2-An out-of-control bus loaded, with 99 boys and men returning from an outing careened brakeless Bown a steep hill Tuesday, filling a girl in one of three ars it rammed before top pling over on its side. .. Twenty-seven boys aboard the Catholic Youth Orjzaniza iion bus suffered minor cuits and bruises and four motor ists were injured, one of them eriously. Had No Horn -"I tried to keep from hit ting traffic," said bus driver Brady Bolt. 29, MI hit a power pole on purpose to try to slow ;us down but I had no horn, no air, no brakes." Z The large bus rumbled (down Santa Anita ave. past the busy intersection of Sierra Madre dr. at speeds up to 59 Jniles an hour. It struck two fcars, one of which in turn mashed head-on into another uto, knocked down several 4rees and a power pole before hitting a parked car and over turning on top of it. Crushed Nearly Flat ? The parked car was crush ed nearly flat. It was unoccupied. The eight young men and adult counselors in the bus were credited with preventing their charges, aged 7 to 12, from panicking after the bus overturned at the end of the approximately one-block wild ride. The dead girl was identified as Corrine Matson, 3, of near by Sierra Madre. Seriously in jured was A. E. Debias of Pasadena.. (UPD Prison officials searched today for dynamite booby traps be lieved planted by 95 convicts who surrendered after holing up for two days In a mine at Brushy Mountain State Pris on. Earl Hensley, about 50, one of four hostages held, said four of the convicts told him the prisoners had set booby traps in the mine. The prisoners, haggard and worn, filed out of the shaft Tuesday. Two hostages, Ben Davis, about 36, and Hensley, the last of four mine foremen held by the prisoners, walked out of the shaft ahead of the prisoners. The convicts had listed nine complaints, tanging from the quality of their food to unsafe conditions in the mines, as the reason for their' rebellion. Havana-Capt. Long's actions." , Havy Polaris Explodes in Air Cape Canaveral, Fla.-(UPI-A Navy Polaris test rocket ex ploded in the air moments after it was launched today. The 28-foot rocket, forerun ner of the Navy's submarine launched ballistic missile, leaped from the launching pad at 8:59 ajn. (p.d.t-). The rocket, streaming white band of smoke, rose smoothly at first, veered sharply making almost a com plete arch, and then blew up Three flaming fragments plummeted into the sea. The defense department said the rocket developed "a malfunction and was destroy ed by the range safety offi cer." The highest auto highway In the United States winds up about 14,260 feet to the peak of Mount Evans, one of the highest in Colorado. Phoenix Club fo Elect Officers Phoenix Ballots to elect officers of the Phoenix Com munity club will be mailed out soon to the club's direc tors, Mayor Arthur H. Mac Kintosh said today. An election of officers was scheduled last night at the club meeting. However, only seven people attended. Allen Harris agreed to accept the nomination as president. Harris said today that a se ries of board meetings will be held to consider community projects. One of the projects, he said, will be to clean up and improve the Community club grounds. Members of Harris's 4-H Beef club worked on the grounds last week to clean them up for the Phoenix-Talent 4-H pre-fair and community Centennial picnic. ' A proposed Phoenix fall carnival was discussed but no action taken pending election of new club officers. Another meeting will be called soon, it was announced. Ce cilia Mass" will be presented by a mixed college-community chorus of more than 100 voices in Lithia park July 27 at 8 pjn. Directed by Louis O. Clay- son, Southern Oregon college music staff member, the mass is set for soprano, tenor, and bass soloists with full chorus. Soloists for the production include sopranos, Tresa Mat lack, Medford; Dolleen Lewis, Ashland; tenors, James Baker, Medford; James Kempster, Medford; bass, Maynard Had ley, Medford, and David Del ler, Ashland. REJECT RED PROPOSAL Ankara, Turkey (UPD The Foreign Ministry disclosed today that Turkey has joined the United States and Britain in rejecting the Soviet pro posal for a nuclear-free zone in the Balkan . and Adriatic Sea areas. The rejection, de livered verbally by the Turk ish ambassador to Moscow, said the proposal would de prive Turkey of the right of self-defense. Wagon Train Due Af Mountain Home Mountain Home, Idaho-flJPD-The On-to-Oregon wagon train was to camp near here to night, just a few miles away from its next major stop in Boise.. The train is due in Boise on Saturday morning, but not be fore some economy-sized wel coming ceremonies along the way. On Friday at a point 12 miles south of the capital city, jet fighters from the 124th fighter squadron will buzz the train in a simulated "Indian raid." To make it look real, the pilots will wear Indian headdresses. A food drop from a cargo plane and a visit by helicopter of Boise Mayor Robert Day also is planned. The wagon train will enter Boise about 9 a.m. Saturday and will immediately parade through the streets. The 59ers will then go to a ranch on the outskirts of Boise for a comparatively restful week end. SAFETY MEASURE FAILS Memphis, Tenn. - (UPD - T. R. Edlemon, 34, was expected to be released from a hos pital today after treatment for injuries suffered while he was avoiding the hazards of the highway. Edlemon, a farmer, said he habitually walks on railroad tracks because he fears he'll be hit by a car or a truck if he walks along the highway. He was hit by an engine Tuesday. Chiloquin Man Killed by Aulo Klamath Falls -(UPD- Gerald Roy Lalo, 20, of Chiloquin, was killed about 2 a.m. today when he stepped onto U. S. highway 97 into the path of a southbound automobile driven by Richard James Church, 17, Bellingham, Wash., according to state police. Owner of the car, David White, 20, of Eugene, who has been attending college in Cali fornia, was asleep in the vehi cle.
