Tuesday, July 14, 1959 Festival Company Has Rogue Valley Residents Several Rogue Valley resi dents are among the company at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival in Ashland this sea son. Philip Hanson, Ashland, is appearing as an actor in all lour of this year's plays. He will be featured in the title role of "King John," and will portray Malvolio in "Twelfth Night," Angelo in "Measure for Measure," and Proculeius in "Antony and Cleopatra." Hanson is a veteran of many seasons on the Ashland stage. W. Bernard Windf another Ashland resident,, is director of music for the Festival Com pany. He is also director of orchestra, and chorus in the music department of the Ash land public schools. This is his seventh season with the festival. Dwaine E. Smith, a Med fordite, is the festival pho tographer. He has served two years in that capacity and has assisted here in special pho tographic assignments in 1958 and 1957 as well. With his wife, Janet, he operates The Classic Studio. Company Dancer Spending her third season with the Shakespearean Festi val, is Virginia Bowman of Ashland. She is a dancer with the company. A student of ballet for several years, she is currently enrolled at the University of Utah. A mathematics major at Pa mona college, Susan Sbively of Ashland is in her fifth Festival season. She is with the box office staff. Sandra Kubalek, Medford, is with the company for the first time this season. In ad dition to appearing in "The Masque of The New World," she is working on several as signments In the technical and costume departments. This fall Miss Kubalek will enroll at the University of Chicago after having spent two years at Colorado university. On the technical staff as a technical apprentice is David L. Bowdoin, Ashland. Bow doin is with the Festival for the second successive season. He is a student at Southern Oregon college where he is majoring in humanities. High School Instructor. Charles Fredrickson of Ash land, lighting technician for the company, is an instructor of English and speech at Ash land High school. Fredrickson holds a bachelors degree in English and received his mas ter of education at the Uni versity of Oregon where he was an active participant in the Very Little Theatre. Another company member from Medford is William Greg ory. In his second season here, Gregory is playing a variety of roles this season. He has been featured in several prom inent roles in recent produc tions as SOC, where he is a humanities major. Margaret Hull, Ashland, has been with the Festival since 1953. This season she is play ing the recorder and violin for the Festival music depart ment. Miss Hull has been a medical technology major at Oregon State college and will enter the University of Ore gon this fall. A native of the Netherlands, but now an Ashland resident, Mia Raaphorst is spending her second season as a musician with the Festival. She is a student at Southern Oregon college majoring in elemen tary educaton. She performs there with the choir as vocal ist and with the Little The atre as. a violinist. Billings Siphon Bids Opened Aug. 18 Bids wil be received until Aug. 18 by the bureau of rec lamation for construction of the Billings siphon in the Tal ent division of the Rogue River basin project. The bids will be received at Building 234, Camp White. The 30-inch siphon near Ashland is about 6,600 lineal feet and will be constructed Of either pretensioned con crete pipe or, steel pipe. The project sighon inlet and out let structures are included. Work is to be completed in 210 days. QUALIFIED CANDIDATE Tllahassee, Fla. Washington-fflPD Attorney General William P. Rogers has warned government officials to exercise "care and thought ful restraint" in making derog atory statements about anyone under their newly-won im munity from libel suits. Rogers said that all officials "should act with an awareness of the vital importance of avoiding unnecessary injury to any person." Prompted on Decisions Rogers' memo was prompt ed by two recent Supreme Court decisions holding that even lesser government of ficials cannot be sued for dam age for defamatory state ments they make in the course of their official duties. , The "absolute .privilege" previously has extended only to cabinet officers. The justice department has long contend ed that subordinate officials of the executive branch should enjoy the same privilege. The high court agreed with the department on June 29 in two cases decided by 5 to' 4 and 6 to 3 votes. He added that such officials "should be keenly aware of the heavy responsibility which falls on him." Duty io Act "With Care He reminded federal em ployees that Justice John M. Harlan in speaking, for the high court on the issue said that the privilege "is not a badge or emolument of exalt ed office, but an expression of a policy designed to aid in the effective functioning of government." ' He said this imposes on all officials " a duty to act with care and restraint for what may be at stake is the reputa tion' of a person without legal resource" to the courts for damages.
