State Farming
Hits High Tempo
Salem -tCTD- Oregon agricul
ture hit a high tempo in mid
July leading the way to a total
employment figure of 700,000,
the department of employ
ment said Friday. This was an
increase of 47,000 workers
since the middle of May.
The strawberry harvest pro
vided most of the new jobs
mainly in the Willamette val
ley. But new jobs also were
reported around Ontario,
Hood River and Milton-Free-water.
The Umatilla county green
pea harvest requires about
600 seasonal workers. Prepa
ration for coming harvests has
spurred employment through
out the state's farm areas.
Some 9,000 workers were
added to the work force in
the canning and preserving
industry and about 2,000 more
in wood products concerns.
