Timber Industry
Outlook Labeled

Economic outlook for the
timber industry is "favor
able," Dale C. Prentice, sec
retary-manager of Southern
Oregon 'Conservation and

to Medford Kiwanis club.
Prentice, speaking at
luncheon at Bogue Valley
Country club, told of a gen
eral increase in demand for
lumber over the past several
months. He said that the de
mand is expected to continue
for several more months then
level off.
The forester, on the matter
of fire danger, declared that
"this could be a very bad
fire year. It doesn't look
" good." He stated that it only
takes a little warmer weather
to put conditions right back
in the danger of the summer
season.
Radio Networks
Prentice- outlined purposes
and services of SOCTFA. He
particularly mentioned the
association's widespread ra
dio networks, which perform
public service and emergen
cy duties as well as handling
routine transmission, and
told of the fire comparative
plan. Pointing to the cost in
men and equipment to fight
fires, in addition to the cost
of material burned, Prentice
said that the cooperative plan
means much to the small op
erator particularly and is wel
comed by the larger firms.
Purposes of SOCTFA in
clude promotion of good for
est practices and striving for
better utilization, promotion
of the practices and rules of
tree farming and establishing
such farms and provision of
a central organization for
dealing with the public and
various agencies in timber
management and the indus
try. In the last 15 years there
probably has been more prog
ress in forestry in the West
than in the past 100 years,
Prentice said.

when - there will be more
chiefs than Indians in indus
try. Between 1947 and 1955
manageriaf and executive per
sonnel increased on the av
erage of 32 per cent, accord
ing to Princeton university re
searchers. During the same
period the number of produc
tion workers rose by only an
estimated 1 per cent.

Granted Divorce

Actress Deborah Kerr Thurs
day was granted an uncontest
ed divorce from her British
actor-husband, Anthony Bart-
ley, on testimony that he fre
quently became violent during
their marriage. They were
married in 1945.
Miss Kerr, 37, herself a
British subject, told Superior
Judge Edward Brand that she
was a legal resident of Los
Angeles county.
Under questioning by her
attorney, Isaac Pacht, she told
the court trial Hartley was
constantly arguing and some
times became violent during
these periods.
Following the hearing,
Pacht told reporters a prop
erty settlement had been
agreed upon between ? Miss
Kerr and Bartley, 40. He
also said agreement had been
reached for the handling of
their two children.

somewhat less dangerous but
similar in behavior to, stron
tium 90, the deadly by-product
of a nuclear explosion,
will be used the first year to
cut the risk of contamination
as farmhands with Ph.D. de
grees' tend the crops.
. Strontium 85 "dies out" in
about two years, according to
James L. Mortensen, associate
professor of agronomy at OSU
and one of the scientists con
ducting the experiment.
Sealed by Concrete Wall
Plans call for strontium 90
itself to be sprayed in solu
tion on the 20 plots, each
about l-20th of an acre and
each sealed by .a concrete
wall, the following year. The
strontium 90, which will be
shipped from the AEC instal
lation at Oak Ridge, Tenn.,
will still retain half its radio
activity 25 years after it en
ters the soil. ' ' ;
Geiger counters and other
devices will be used to meas
ure the amount of radioactiv
ity absorbed by the grains as
they grow in the fields, Mor
tensen said. .
The concrete . walls sur
rounding the plots will collect
the rain water, which runs off
the land. It, too, will be an
alyzed. . ; .
To Be Sprayed on Trees
In 1960, the strontium 90
will be sprayed on natural
virgin wooden areas near here
and in other parts of Ohio to
measure its effects on grow
ing trees.
The experiment is the only
one in the country to be con
ducted on farmlands under
natural conditions, Mortensen
said. Experimenters have con
ducted similar research in
greenhouses, he said.
