INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE TQOAYf T7 Piclrin' Pears News and Notes From Camp White By SID HOLLINGSWORTH Camp White With atten tion given at Camp White to come of the problems of age , among veterans, notably in the fields of adaptation, activ ity and recreation, comes a re port to Manager Henry Her zog concerning the more scien tific asDects undertaken in medical research. It is this problem of dealing with the aging that concerns the Veterans Administration most now, not so much be cause of the preponderance of older men under care at the present time, but because in another decade there will be only six million of the 22 mil lion veterans under age 45. The studies now going for ward at various VA' centers throughout the country are aimed at better knowledge of physical disease, mental ail ments and basic conditions on aging itself. Here are a few of the basic studies: An 11 hospital study of drugs used for treatment of high blood pressure. A 14 hospital study of hard ening of the arteries, heart at tacks and strokes. A 16 hospital study of lung functions in older men. There are 64 groups in 59 different VA hospitals work ing uder direction of the Na tional Cancer Institute on ' chemotherapy in cancer. Gland deterioration, changes in brain wave patterns in old er men, and the response of older veterans .to hormones are under investigation at Martinsburg, W. Va., hospital. A stuy of the intercellular cement that holds cell struc tures together is being. made at Downey hospital near Chi cago, and at Pittsburgh. The chemical and clinical as pects of diet are being consid ered at the West Roxbury, Mass., VA hospital. At Brooklyn, N.Y., glau coma, the disease that causes blindness in older people is under investigation. . The question of whether or Hatfield Appoints Planning Member " Salem-(UPD-Gov. Mark Hat- field Wednesday appointed Dr. R. E. Kleinsorge of Silver ton to the Capitol Planning Commission. Dr. Kleinsorge served sev eral years on the State Board of Highway Education, includ ing terms as its president and chairman of the Campus Building committee, before retiring from the board ear lier this year. On the Capitol Planning Commission, Dr. Kleinsorge replaced William Givler of Portland, whose term expired. The governor, also reappoint ed Mrs. Elizabeth Lord of Salem to the Capitol Planning Commission. Dr. Kleinsorge was origin ally appointed to the State Board of Higher Education by Gov. Charles A. Sprague in 1941. Sprague now -is vice chairman of the Capitol Plan ning Commission. ' MOUSE OUTFOXES CAT Warminster, England CUPD Pippa, a Siamese cat, chased a fox out of her mistress' chicken yard today, and then lost a fight with a mouse. Mrs. Maureen Ashton said the fox fled after a brief fight with Pippa. But a few hours later, a field mouse bit the cat so severely she required veterin ary treatment. There are six federal pris ons in tot U.S. .! nat hearing begins to decrease after 40, is receiving atten tion at West Side hospital in Chicago. At Wadsworth, Kan. VA Center the effect of age on mouth and teeth is a problem for the dentists. These are a few of the re search projects under way at the present time. Although the largest percentage of men over 55 today are World War I veterans, the immediate problem at hand concerns the Spanish War veterans. A generalized study is under way at the Boston out patient clinic of the VA, deal ing with physical condition, emotional makeup, diet, habits and life history. One fact ap parent thus far in this study is that the octogenarians "seem amazingly young in their mental and emotional outlook on life." Manager Herzog was im pressed with the recent dona tion by C. C. Hoover whose ranch is adjacent to the VA property, of saplings for the grove of trees that will even tually screen the domiciliary from the sun. Charley Hoover has been a good neighbor at Camp White during all the period of devel opment. Burt Sims,xchief of the en gineering division, has planted the new trees in an area of the cemetery grounds where they may grow before being trans planted to stategic locations around the camp. Hoover recently extended an invitation to "rock hounds" at the domiciliary to use a por tion of his property for rock hunting. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Po morski, of St. Paul, Minn., brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Postmaster Art Scar seth stopped over for a week end visit at Cantfp White re cently while touring the northwest en route to their home. Bud Ash, recreation chief, has arranged a schedule of off-station trips for members during July and August. Cra ter Lake trips will be made on Wednesdays starting July 22. Fishing trips in the region are slated for the first and third Tuesday, and rock hunting ex cursions are on order for the second Tuesday. Valley, scenic trips will be made for wheelchair members on Thursdays. Occasional bus trips for Fifty Plus club mem bers are open for Fridays. On Saturday and Sunday when no games are scheduled for Me morial field, a bus will be available to take the men to ball games in Medford. Announcement is made that VAVS sponsored events in the theatre for July and August will be at a minimum due to increased outdoor activities. Stan Sears, recreation lead er in arts and crafts, is being transferred to the'VA hospi tal, Lincoln, Neb., where he will become director of volun teers. The transfer is effective July 12. Sears has been at Camp White two years, during which time attention was giv en to the activity program in coordinating hobby interests and craft training. A gesture of international sportsmanship marked the close of the two game series at Memorial field between the Vancouver, B.C. Queens and the Dairy Maids, won by the Maids, when the two teams came from tneir augouis xo shake hands at home plate.
