Wednesday, July S, 1959 Handicap Rating Gives Boat Race Lead to Kialoa : Los Angeles-fliTO-Kialoa, the 50-foot yawl out of Newport Harbor, Calif., held its lead in the handicap ratings enter ing the fifth day of sailing to day in the 2,225-miel trans pacific yacht race from Los Angeles to Honolulu. i At last report by radio Tuesday the 1 61-foot schooner Goodwill retained its lead of the 41-yacht fleet, but still was down in the handicap ratings. The Kialoa wasn't a con tender among the leaders of the fleet but its handicap place it ahead in the adjusted ratings based ' on size and classification of each ship. :. The Goodwill, owned by Ralph Larrabee and sailing out ' of Newport ' Harbor was .1,625 miles from, its destina tion at roll call Tuesday, 'about one-fourth of the dis tance. It led by 42 miles its nearest contender, Sally Blair Ames' 75-foot schooner Con stellation, followed by -Baldwin M. Baldwin's 72-foot yawl Escapade, E. L. Doheny's 75 foot Kamalii and Ira P. Ful mor's 60-foot yawl Criterion. Mark Claimed In High Hurdles '-(. Zurich, Switzerland - (UPD - Officials of . an international track meet here said today that . a new world record of 13.2 seconds for the 110-meter high hurdles by Martin Lauer of West Germany definitely will be submitted for official recognition. 1 The officials found that a following wind which was be hind Lauer during Tuesday's race was only 1.9 meters' per second, just within the per mitted maximum. ' Lauer clipped two-tenths of a second off the world mark held jointly by two Ameri cans, Jack Davis and Milton Campbell. In addition, Lauer returned to the track within an hour and, ran. what is be lieved to be the fastest 200 meter hurdles ever run around one turn, 22.5 seconds. .!" The world record of 22.1 seconds for the 200-meter hur dles was set by Elias Gilbert of Winston-Salem, N. C," col lege on a straight-away. Dairy Maids Play Jills Camp White-Rouge Valley Dairy Maids fill in the gap inursday night with a non league softball encounter at Memorial stadium, Camp White. They entertain the Rose- burg Lumberjills. No infor mation is readily available on that club. The Dairy Maids have a bye this week end in the North west Women's Major league. They play three ; games in Portland against American Linen the following .week end. The July 17 mix will be a non-league benefit tussle and the frays on the following two nights will count in the North west standings. Western Open At Pittsburgh Pittsburgh (UPD Pittsburgh is set today to host its second All-Star event of- the week- the $25,000 Western Open golf tournament, which opens Thursday on the 6,623-yard Pittsburgh Field club course. But unlike ; the All-Star baseball game held here Tues day, a quartet of golfdom's brightest stars will be absent from the event. Masters champion Art Wall, 1959's leading money winner from Pocono Manor, Pa., heads the group of absentees U. S. Open champion Billy Casper, of Apple Valley, Calif., was forced to withdraw earlier in the week with a back ailment. . Two aging stars, Ben Hogan and Slam min' Sammy Snead, round out the list of missing headliners But there will be, plenty of top talent in the 130-odd pros shooting for the top prize of $5,000. Arnold Palmer, strong boy from Legionier, Pa., is the early favorite but he will have tough competition from such as Cary Middlecoff, Bob Ros burg, Ken Venturi, Mike Souchak, "Doug Ford and PGA champion Dow Finsterwald. Defending champion Doug Sa"hders, of Miami Beach, Fla., is also back. SIGN AGREEMENT New York (UPD - The New York Rangers of the National Hockey league today an nounced the signing of a work ing agreement for the 1959-60 season with the Springfield, Mass., Indians of the Ameri can Hockey league. Bourne, Engelhorn Medalists in PNGA ; Sue DeVoe, Medford, quali fied for the championship flight in the women's tourney of the Pacific Northwest Golf association at Columbia-Edge-water course at Portland. She had an 88-81-169 for the 36 holes of Monday and Tuesday qualifying. Miss DeVoe, who has played little golf since last fall, entered the tourney after sharpening her game with practice in recent weeks . at Rogue Valley Country club. She has been invited to con tend in the Western Women's Invitational at Seattle. Ashland's meet, open to male participants, -will have field events "starting at 7:15 p.m. and the first race at 7:30 p.m. Junior events at Medford get underway at 10 a.m. and high school and open division rivalry is planned for 5 p.m. In the meet here competition is offered in junior classes for girls as well as boys. Events for older girls could be added on demand. AAU membership is re quired for the Medford meet. Membership cards can be ob tained and dues paid at the time of registration and pay ment of the small entry fee. Becerra is the second Mex ican to try to lift Halimi's title. Raul Raton Macias made the first attempt Nov. 6,, 1957, here in Los Angeles. Becerra was on the same card and suffered a crushing defeat- knocked out in four rounds by Dwight Hawkins, a defeat he later reversed. .Halimi, the 27-year-old French-Alegerian of Jewish ancestry, probably will try to put on the same type of fight against Becerra that he did against Macias with the hope for the same victorious result. The bull-shouldered champion shoots for points with, a powerful body attack and after he has weakened his opponent sufficiently eith er continues on for a decision of 'then tries for a knockout. Becerra, 23, on the other hand, is a strong puncher when he is fresh. He will be shooting for a quick knockout and his ability to go 15 rounds is untested, never having gone that route. Suds Nick Beavers With 2 in Eighth United Prats International Seattle scored two runs in: the eighth inning to nick Port-' land 2-1 Tuesday night behind Jay Hook's four-hit pitching in a Pacific Coast league series opened here. - Successive singles by Hal Bevan and Carroll Hardy along with a Portland error sent the winning runs across. George Brunet, Portland starter, suffered his eighth de feat against one victory. For Hook it was the ninth win in 16 decisions. Portland threatened in the ninth as Bob DePietro. and Charlie Secrest hit singles with one out, but Hook got the next two batters out. The lone Beaver run came in the third when Milt Graff was safe on an error by Bobby Adams. Graff scored from first when Dave Melton doubled to the left field cor ner: . -: I,:. jffhf Vancouver - Mounties have finally broken " away from the pack in the Pacific Coast league and are pressing the Sacramento Solons for the lead. . The Mounties rang up a double win over Spokane by scores of 1-0 and 7-3 Tuesday night to move within two games of the Solons. And the Mounties are now three and a half games ahead of third place Portland. Sacramento Wins In other PCL action Tues day night, Sacramento cashed in on a pair of home runs to wallop San Diego 8-4 and Phoenix defeated Salt Lake, 5-4. Len, Tucker was the Van couver hero. He tripled home the only run of the first game and doubled in what proved to be the winning tally in the second game. ' Wes Stock struck out ten as he 'pitched, a three hitter to gain the win for the Moun ties in the 7-inning opener. The loser, Chris Nicolosi, gave up only four hits. rr Chuck Estrada stPuck out 11 of the free swinging In dians in the second game. Brooks Robinson led the Van couver attack with a 400-foot homer and a single. Estrada had a shaky start but went the distance, giving up seven hits. Barry Shetrone also homered for the Mounties.
