The most expensive extra in Hollywood history popped up at the MGM studio recently. Her name is Gwendolyn and she cost the com pany $1,200 for a single day's work. Then, out of the other side of his mouth, he trumpets: "FORCE WILL BE MET WITH FORCE if the situation in Berlin erupts into .hostili ties." " IITHAT'S he up to? Turn to Midsummer Night's Dream, Act I, Scene 2, in which a play is being cooked up for the Duke of Athens and his duchess and the actors are discussing the parts they will take. There's a lion in the play. Bottom wants to play the part of the lion. He says: "I will roar, that I will do any any man's heart good to hear me; I will roar, that I will make the duke say, 'Let him roar again, let him roar again'." Quince (who is doing the casting) . is afraid Bottom might roar too realistically. He says: "An you should do it too terribly, that would fright . the ladies, that they would shriek, and that were enough to hang us all." To which Bottom replies: "I grant you, friends, if that you should fright the ladies out of their wits, they would have no more discre tion but to hang us, but I will aggravate my voice so that I will roar you as gently as any suckling dove; I will rdar as 'twere any nightingale." . THAT TELLS the tale. Koz lov is playing the part of Bottom. But When he roars as gently as any suckling dove, how much reliance, can we put in it? The answer in short and simple: NONE! In the case of communist Russia, every agreement she has made has been broken at the first moment when it has suited her purposes to repu diate her solemn agreements. ' yHAT shall WE do about On this Fourth of July week end, I think it is fitting that we should go back for an answer to our Declaration of Independence, which opens with these words: "When, in the course of human . events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature's Gift en title them, a decent respect for the opinions of mankind requires that they should de clare the causes which impel them to the separation." Our Declaration - one of the great documents of all mankind - closes with these ringing words: "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm re liance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mu tually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor." . THAT'S what we did once before - and it served us well. Let's make it plain that if we have to we'll do it again. That's about all that will stop Russia. Chicago Man Elks Exalted Ruler Chicago (UPD - William S. Hawkins, Coeur d'Alene, Ida ho, was elected grand exalted of the convention included at the 95th Grand Lodge Con vention today. Hawkins, 48, an attorney, was the youngest man ever elected to the order's highest office. Other officers elected dur ing the first business meeting The business session got Edwin J. Two Men Arrested For Theft of Tires Eugene (UPD - Lane county seriff s officers captured two men Sunday night and con fiscated $1200 worth of new tiress and a battery charger that had been taken from a service station here early Sun day. A service station operated by Robert McCade, was en tered and the material stolen. The tires and battery charg er were accidentlly located by camp five miles east of Amer on Day Island road. , County police set up a stakeout and captured Clay ton K. Conely, 20, Prosser, Wash., and William Mortimer, Eugene. SWEET TOOTH New York (UPD A robber stole $161.74 from the cash register and safe of a Times Square candy shop and, while police were rushing to the scene, walked into another candy shop and took $500. " Church Council President- Lists Commandments For Travelers New York -(UPD-The presi dent of the National Council of Churches hopes all summer travelers are carrying their Bibles with them for daily devotionals during their va cations. The Rev. Edwin T. Dahl berg put this wish forth in a list of "ten vacation com mandments" he prepared for the council's monthly maga zine "Outlook." Dahlberg's summer advice ranges from warnings against poison ivy, shallow swimming holes and careless driving to a request for continued church contributions even while away on vacation. Officers said the blonde dancer filed the burglary re port under her real name, Dale Phillips. The 25-year-old stripper; presently working in local nightspots, is free on $15,000 bond pending appeal of a narcotics conviction in Dallas, Tex. Clark, Dodge & Co. finds most issues well received on the municipal bond market. A tremendous amount of bond placement has been done in the midst of a gradually fall ing market, the firm notes. Standard & Poor's reports June was another month fea tured by good dividend news. It notes 32 dividend increases against 55 in June of 1958. Only four reductions were voted against 58 a year ago. Omissions totaled 13 against 40 last year. There were 28 dividend resumptions. Barrel Believed To Be Radioactive Held in Isolation Coos Bay-(UPD-A white met al barrel thought to contain radioactive waste matter that washed up on the beach at Port Orford Saturday remain ed in isolation at the Coos Head Naval facility here to day. Lieutenant Commander F. L. Laws, commanding officer of the facility, said the drum, marked in red: "Danger, Ra dioactive Waste, AEC," was being kept under wraps as a precautionary measure until it was learned where it came from, and exactly what was inside. Examination Planned Indications were that in spectors from the Atomic Energy Commission's Han- ford, Wash., plant would come here to examine the barrel The AEC in Washington, D.C., said private firms sometimes are licensed to dispose of ra dioactive waste but in those instances barrel's, like the AEC's, are supposed to be en cased in concrete so they will be carried several hundred fathoms down. After the barrel was sight ed on the beach at Port Or ford, the area was placed off limits and an armed guard set up. A team of Navy investi gators from Seattle checked and said there was no radio activity evident on the outside of the barrel or on the beach. It was taken here. Fourth of July celebrations were delayed here until dusk. Linn County Cock Fight Scene Raided Albany - (UPD -.About 30 Linn county sheriff's deputies and state police Saturday raided a cock fight in a barn on a farm In the Sodaville area 19 miles east of here. Twenty-three persons were charged with betting at a cock fight and more than 75 were cited for vagrancy. i The raid was led by Sheriff George Miller. Assistant Linn County District Attorney Jim Lewelling said five dead birds and a betting board were con fiscated. The cock fight was in a barn on the Vern Bridges farm. Those cited included persons from Oregon, Califor nia and Washington, Lewell ing said. All were scheduled to appear in district court here Wednesday.
