LEGAL NOTICES ORDINANCE NO. 7259 AJT ORDINANCE declaring the assessment on the property bene fited for the cost of laying a Six Inch Water Main on Mary Street from Saling Avenue to Jackson Street and on Jackson Street from Mary Street to McAndrews Street, in the City of Medford, Oregon, and directing the recorder to enter a statement thereof in the Docket of City Liens and publish a notice thereof as required by the Charter. THE CITY OF MEDFORD DOTH ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Whereas the City Council did heretofore by Resolu tion declare its intention to lay a Six Inch Water Main on Mary Street from Saling Avenue to Jack son Street and on Jackson Street from Mary Street to McAndrews Street, in the City of Medford, Ore gon, and to assess the cost thereof on the property fronting on said portion of said street (s) in propor tion to the frontage of said prop erty, and did fix a time and place for hearing protests against the laying of said water main on said street (s) and the assessment of the cost thereof as aforesaid. AND WHEREAS said Resolution was duly posted and published as required by Section 116 of the Charter of said City. AND WHEREAS a meeting of the Council was held at the time and place fixed in said Resolution for the purpose of considering any such protests but no protests were t sucn time made to or received by the Council to the laying of said water main or the assessing of the cost theerof as aforesaid, and said Council, having considered the mat ter and deeming that said water main was and is of material bene fit to said City, and that all prop erty to be assessed therefor will be benefited to the extent of the probable amount of the resDective assessments to be levied against said property, did order said water main laid. AND WHEREAS a summary of tne cost of the said water main is as follows: SUMMARY Construction Cost $2,101.14 Advertising , 34.44 Engineering 99.00 Notice of Assessment 44.72 Interest on Warrants.. 22.73 y f v . NOW THEREFORE, it is hereby further determined that the pro portionate share of the cost of lay ing said water main of each parcel of the property fronting on said portion of said, street (s) is the amount set opposite the description of each piece or parcel of land be low and that each such piece or parcel is benefited by the laying of said water main to the full extent of the amount so set opposite the description of such piece or parcel and that the respective amounts represent the proDortional benefits of said water main to said respec tive parcels of property and also the proportional frontage thereof on said portion oi said street (S) and the Council does hereby de clare each of the parcels of prop-, erty in the City of Medford as described below to be assessed and each of the same hereby is assessed the amount set opposite each re spective description for the cost of laving said water mam. Faces TDnireats off War Washington-flJPD-The threat of a shooting war in the Carib bean hung today over a meet ing of the Organization . of American States on the Do minican Republic's invasion charges against Cuba and Venezuela. The three countries have placed their armed forces on a war footing. Reports from Cuidad Trujillo, the Domini can capital, quoted high gov ernment officials as referring publicly to the possibility of "open belligerence." -Special .Meeting Seen The OAS was-expected to summon a special meeting of the foreign ministers of the 21 American nations to discuss the tense Caribbean situation. Dominican Ambassador Vir gilio Liaz Ordonez told the or ganization last week that Cuba and Venezuela backed invasions of his country June 14 and June 20. He said 3,000 men were training in Cuba and 25 warplanes had been obtained by Venezuela in preparation for a new in vasion. Cuba and Venezuela heat edly denied the charges. They said that the Dominican Re public planned to bomb San- Former Legislator Dies in California Ben C. Sheldon, 82, a mem ber of the Oregon state legis lature from Jackson county from 1918 to 1922, died June 28 in Los Angeles. He was a resident of Medford until 1932- and owned a home at 1470 Kings highway. Mr. Sheldon was a pioneer land developer in the Los An geles area in the 1920s and 30s. He . was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Al Malaikah Shrine club, and the Los Angeles Kiwanis club. . He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Clyde; a son, Dr. Da vid B. Sheldon; two brothers and six grandchildren. Funeral services were con ducted July 1. Peace Threatened Diaz Ordonez told the OAS that a threat to the peace ex isted which required that the inter-American foreign minis ters be summoned under terms of the Rio mutual as sistance treaty. He said speedy action was needed to avoid "catastrophe" and "bloodlet ting." , It was doubtful that the Do minican Republic could get the 14 votes needed to invoke the never-befofe-used foreign ministers provision of the treaty. Instead, the OAS prob ably will call the ministers meeting on broader grounds, such as to discuss economic problems and means for strengthening representative democracy. Car Hits Horse on Highway Sunday . A, horse-car . accident oc curred Sunday morning near the Tally-ho restaurant on the South Pacific highway, state police reported today. A horse owned by Shirley Krause, route 1, box 63, Tal ent, became untied near the restaurant, ran across the highway and fell on the pave ment. A car driven by Monty Sherman Wray, 26, of 869 Garden Way, Ashland, struck the horse as it lay on the pave ment, officers said. The horse suffered small cuts, on -his right leg and a large lump on his right hip. The car had a damaged hood and right fender. Bids on Maintenance Shop to Open Here The Medford school district will open bids for the con struction of a maintenance shop building at 8 p.m., July 14. The building is to measure 100 by 120 feet and will house an auto repair shop, wood shop, a storage area, and spray, paint, welding, and boiler rooms and restrooms. Plans can be. obtained at the office of the architect, William H. Siebert, Medford. Specifications call for con crete block walls. The floor is to be a concrete slab and the roof of glued laminated beams with a four-inch wood deck and 'built-up roof. Sash and exterior doors are steel. 'Bloody July 5th' Anniversary Marked Portland -IUPD- About 1,200 persons observed the silver anniversary of "bloody July 5th" here Sunday wifth a pa rade and a memorial service at the Battleship Oregon site. Longshoremen and others came from several parts of the state to take part in the parade in downtown Port land. . The ceremony each year is in memory 'of five men killed in 1934 violence on the Pa cific Coast when the Long shoremen's union was fight ing for recognition and establishment.
