Conductors of Rogue valley orchestras were filled with praise for Piero Bellugi (at left), new conductor of the Portland orchestra. Pictured here with Director Bellugi are Dr. Herbert M. Cecil (wearing glasses), Southern Oregon college faculty member and director of the Southern Oregon Little Symphony orchestra; John Drysdale, director of Medford High school's orchestra and Richard D. Werner, director of the , Phil harmonic Society of Southern Oregon. Valley residents enjoyed meeting members of the Portland group and among those attending were (at right, left to' right) Mrs. John H. Luslc, Mrs. John Drysdale, Heimo Haitto, concertmaster of the orchestra and Roman Dukson, first cellist. The concert was sponsored by the Fine Arts committee of the Oregon Centennial commission, and valley patrons of the Philharmonic Society made arrangements for the reception. Mrs. Catherine Moore, clarinetist with the Portland Symphony orchestra, is pictured here with Mrs. Tom E. Popham, Medford, chairman of the reception committee, and Dr. Arthur Kreisman, Ashland,' Southern Oregon college faculty member and member of the Fine Arts . committee of the Oregon Centennial commission. Mrs. Moore,' whose husband, Ted, also plays clarinet in the Port land orchestra, has on the official formal suit which women members of. the orchestra wear for evening concerts. I mil hi Ml IMMMMMMWIMWIIMIIIIMI MIIMM mini i WM J, ' if ' Pouring for the reception at Rogue Valley Country club Sunday evening which honored members of the Portland Symphony orchestra were Mrs. Henry DeVoss, Talent (at left), and Mrs. Ralph Matlack. Here Mrs. Matlack serves James Weiler, who plays first trumpet with the Port land orchestra. One of the hosts for the evening was Ernest R. Hood Jr., coordinator of the Jackson County Centennial association, who makes an impressive appearance with his forty-niner beard. Mrs. DeVoss and Mrs. Matlack, as well as other women of valley cities who helped with the reception plans, are members of Philharmonic Society guild, supporting organization of the Philharmonic orchestra. ') ''l ' ill III liltnlll fW1 ill tfHl'fS These two bearded "cats" aren't part of the Beatnik generation, but well-known Medford businessmen rigged up for a costume party. Guests at the party were served stew for dinner and drank from tin cans. "It's gonna be. crazy, man" read the invitations which the Donald Herrieds and John R. Reids sent, out for the Beatnik party which they gave last Saturday night at the Herried's home on Black Oak drive in Medford. Waiting for their guests are (left to right) Mr. Herried, Mrs. Reid, Mrs. Herried and Mr. Reid, who smoked a huge pipe in the best Beatnik tradition. The party was a playroom, garage and patio event. Roll call for the Beatnik party last Saturday night found Mrs. Oscar J. Halboth wearing brief skirt and long blouse, while Mrs. Houston L. Bush Jr., disguised herself with a wig of untidy hair and dark glasses.
