Ralph Terry Appears Answer To NY Problem; Beats Orioles By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International Don't just stand there, do something - and now that Ralph Terry finally has, Casey Stengel is convinced things are looking up for the Yankees. "I gotta find me another pitcher before we can get back up there again,". Casey has been saying all along. Stengel never mentioned any names but the implication-was plain he was wait ing on Terry, who was obtain ed from Kansas City on May 26. The' skinny, 23-year-old righthander certainly looked like the answer to Casey's problem Wednesday night when he pitched a four-hitter struck out six and walked only one in a 4-0 victory over Baltimore. 1 That victory was only the first for Terry since coming from the A's, but it moved the Yankees into third place, only three games off the pace, and dropped the Or ioles into fifth. place after they had occupied a first-division berth for 70 consecu tive days. Two Yanks Homer Norm Siebern nad Gil Mc Dougal each homered as Skin ny Brown suffered his third loss of the season and the Orioles their fourth in a row. The second-place White Sox shaved Cleveland's lead to one game with a 6-5 victory over the Indians; Washington beat Boston, 4-1; and Detroit defeated Kansas City, 5-4. In the National league, Philadelphia nipped Pitts burgh, 1-0, and Chicago mov ed within a half-game of fourth place with a 6-5 decis ion over St. Louis. Rain post . poned the only other sched uled game between Milwau kee and Cincinnati. Turk Lown had to put down a ninth-innig rally by the Indians to save the White Sox victory. Lown retired the side in order, after Woodie Held's two-run horner in the ninth off Gerry Staley had v drawn the Tribe within a run T of the White Sox. Starter Bar ry Latman was credited with his second victory. Tito Fran- cona and Earl Torgeson also homered. Jim Mudcat Grant was the loser. Pascual Wins Seventh Camilo Pascual paced the Senators to their third straight victory with a four hitter over the reeling Red Sox, who lost their fourth in a row and their sixth game in the last seven. Washington scored all of its runs off Jerry Casale, including a three-run rally in the seventh. It was Pascual's seventh vic tory against the same number of losses. Detroit starter Paul Foy- tack had a one-hitter until the eighth against Kansas City but then required Ray Nar leski's aid in the ninth after tagged for homers by Kent Hadley and Bob Cerv. Gene Conley out-pitched Ronnie Kline in the Phils' triumph over the Pirates. Con ley hurled a five-hitter and struck out eight in bringing his record to 6-4.. The Phillies scored the only run of the game with two out in the third inning when Joe Koppe walked, stole second and came around on Richie Ashburn's single. Kline suffered his sixth loss against six vic tories. Bobby Thomson's ninth-inning single scored Ernie Banks from second base with the run that gave the Cubs their" victory over the Cards. Thomson came through with his game-winning hit off re liever Lindy McDaniel, who was tagged with his ninth loss against six victories. St. Louis had a 5-1 lead until Chicago tied the score with a four run rally in the eighth to chase starter Ernie Broglio. Don Elston, the Cubs' third pitcher, won his fifth game in six decisions. Bilko, 30, who weighs roughly 250 pounds and stands 6-1, belted his 16th and 17th homers of the seaon Wednesday night as he led Spokane to a 9-4 win over Portland. But Steve, who led the PCL in 1955-56-57 with 37; 55, and 56 homers, is still one behind pace setting Willie McCovey of the Phoenix Giants. McCovey -hit No. 18 Wednesday night while his mates were taking a 9-6 de feat from San Diego. Mc Covey. who is 21, 6' 4" and weighs 198, is also locked in a duel with Bilko for the runs - batted - in crown. Both had 58 rbi's at the last offi cial count of games through last Sunday. Bees Defeat Sacs In the only other PCL game played Wednesday night, first- place- Sacramento was beaten by bait Jiake, 7-4. rne scned uled Seattle at Vancouver contest was . postponed by ram. Sacramento's loss cut the Solons' lead to three games over Vancouver. George Perez tossed a six-hitter at the Solons. Sam Miley collected a pair of singles to 'drive in three runs in the early going to give the Bees a lead they never gave up.- Carl Greene was tagged with his fifth loss against STANDINGS United Press International NATIONAL LEAGUE West Virginia Man Candidate At Washington Seattle-dJPD-A source close to the athletic activities of the University of Washington indicated today that Fred Schaus of the University of West Virginia was the lead ing candidate to take over as head basketball coach at Washington. "Whether Schaus will take the job is another thing," the spokesman said. George Briggs, Washington athletic director, said he had talked to Schaus, 32, by phone and it has been rumored that the West Virginia coach was in Seattle for two days. Briggs has admitted talking with Schaus but refuses to disclose how far the talks have gone. , Briggs intends to announce a replacement for resigning Tippy Dye by the end of this 'week or early next week. Trophies will go for first, second and third low gross in boys divisions and first and second low gross among the girls. Entry and fee must be in by Friday, July 17. The fee will include price of the Mon day lunch. Entrants may have practice rounds after 4 p.m. on Sun day, July 19. Central Point, Illinois Val ley and Ashland defeated their rivals yesterday after noon in the starting games of the Southern Oregon Junior Baseball league club team schedule. Illinois Valley barely nip ped Medford 3 to 2. Central Point pounded the Grants Pass Bears 16 to 3 and Ash land overcame the Grants Pass Cubs 11 to 7. ' In a pee wee loop make-up game yesterday, Eagle Point squelched the Ashland Bears 19 to 0 to draw into a third place tie with the Medford Wildcats with a 2-1 standing. The Cave Junction club scored its winning run against the Medford Cub nine in the fifth inning on a single by Capps, a hit batter, a passed ball and an error. Miles Triples All' of the other counters were in the third inning. Med ford got its two on a single by Steve Isaacs", a triple by Dn Miles and bad throw-in from the outfield. For IV Capps and Hoskins singled and there were two errors. The opposing pitchers threw five hitters. Bud Lowry of Medford fanned nine and issued no walks but hit three batters. Reinoehl, of IV whiffed three and walked one. Capps hit three for three, one a triple. ' Denny Samples hurled two ball ball for the Central Point Cub team which socked 15 hits, itself. Central Point put over six runs in the opening canto on five hits, two' walks and three errors. John Champ tripled with two men on. Five runs crossed in the third on four hits, two bases on balls and an error. ."" Samples struck out 12 bat ters but hit three and walked two in the second inning when the Bears gained all their scores. . The.GP Cubs got one in the fourth Inning, then in the fifth picked up five to tie the game on three walks, three errors and a fielder's option. Four runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits, , including a three-master by Al Schmaltz, and two walks, put Ashland back in front. Bob King, pitching a three hit job, fanned 13 and walked five. Ray Samuelson, King and Schmaltz each had two hits for Ashland. Eagle Point pitcher Bob Corliss held the Ashlanders to one hit, fanned 10 and walked two in the pee wee game. Medford American Legion baseball nine used -two hits and a sacrifice for one run and a base on balls, stolen base and catcher's dropped third strike and bad throw for another last night to trim Klamath Falls 2 to 0. at Me morial stadium, Camp White. The verdict, elevated the Post 15 team into a first place tie with Klamath in the south ern division of Area 4. Although in trouble part of the time, Medford chucker Herb Wheeler held down Klamath Falls with three hits. Calvin Dean with three safe blows in three times up and Dick Ragsdale with two for three provided all of the Med ford hitting punch. Three Double Plays Three errors were charged to the Pear city club, but Med ford field play stood up in the clutch. Portland - (UPD - Champion Don Jordan and challenger Denny Moyer of Portland sharpened their timing and stiffened their punches Wednesday as they honed into shape for their welterweight title fight at Portland Mead ows here July 10. " Young Moyer's stock was given a boost Wednesday when Ring Magazine listed him second among the world's welterweights. Previously Moyer had been ranked fifth. He hopes the 15-round title fight at Portland Meadows will make him the No. 1 welter. But Jordan, training to a fine point at his Blue Lake Park quarters at the northeast edge of Portland, gave ample indication that he intends to keep the No. 1 welter spot for himself. Sid Flaherty, Moyer's man ager, after watching Denny go six sharp rounds against sparring partners, observed: "He's '. getting there." Fla herty predicted a victory for his protege. But the odds still favored Jordan, 4 to 1. Jordan was reported so well along in con ditioning for the fight,that he confined his work Wednesday to early morning running, then punching the bag and shadow boxing. Stickley, Bullock Top Golf Field Muirfield, Scotland (UPD -English professionals Fred Bullock and Arnold Stickley led the field into the second round of the British Open Golf Championship today, with all four American en trants facing a desperate fight to stay in competition.
