Dr. Carlyla Adams, of Rennsal a e r, N. Y., who re portedly said, "It is just as wrong to keep a dying pa tient alive by extraordinary medical means as it is to kill." The minis t r spoke feelingly because, some time ago when his father had a bad stroke, the doctors with great effort succeeded in pro longing the old man's suffer ing. They kept him alive by intravenous feedings and the giving of oxygen. Dr. Adams, in talking to a group of physicians, said that he felt that a man should have a right to die with dignity when the Good Lord seemed to be sending for him. The minister was grateful to his family doctor when, on request, he put a stop to the strenuous efforts being made to keep his father alive a few more days or weeks. In the discussion, the Rev. Edward L. O'Malley, Roman Catholic chaplain of Brady Hospital, in Albany, agreed, and said according to the newspaper account - "You have an obligation to use ordinary medical means to prolong life when death ap proaches, but there is no ob ligation on you to use extra ordinary means." As many thoughtful per sons have written me in the last few years, when their loved parent was obviously dying after a terrible stroke, or with a badly scattered cancer, and. when the parent was suffering much pain, and when nothing useful could be accomplished by prolonging the agony, they had done as the Rev. Dr. Adams had done, and had asked the doctors to order only good nursing and drugs to relieve pain. Every single one of the ' many people who, in recent years have written to me about this problem have agreed that every man or woman should have the right to die in peace. Many of my correspondents have begged me to try to in fluence the medical profes sion to think about this mat ter, and perhaps to change their old unthinking code of behavior. Th following poem by Ruth L. Card of Wellesley, expresses perfectly the won dering of the aging person as to his way of going. Will it be Quick or slow? Will he have warning or will he not, and will his doctors insist on keeping him alive and in pain long after he has wanted to go? I recommend it to my readers. My Soul Will B Impatient How will it come - that moment when the thread That we cal life breaks and the soul is free? Will I have time to feel it straining taut, And think, "well, this is it?" And can I say A word of resignation and of faith? Will it snap suddenly, with only time For one quick, startled mo ment of surprise? Or slowly - with a peace ful, long-drawn breath. Then gone? Many Parts of Brain Hay Definite Function Years ago, when I was in Switzerland, I had a delight ful visit with Professor W. R. Hess, one of the world's great est students of brain localiza tion. After years of research, he was able to draw a map of hundreds of "points." When each of these points was stimulated by a tiny elec tric current, the animal, per haps a rat or a cat, would respond with a predictable response. It might wink its eye, or turn its head, or be pleased, or it might go into a rage. These observations can ex plain some of the peculiar things that happen to many an aging person when he gets what I call a "little stroke." A small spot in his brain is destroyed by the plugging-up of the tiny artery that sup plies the region with blood. Then the person may get a burning spot or a numb spot on his tongue, or on his scalp, or on his face, or somewhere on his body. Or he may get a nasty taste- in his mouth, or he may have trouble swallow ing, because, occasionally, the food goes down the wrong way.. I remember people who got a little stroke in the "crying area" of the brain, and as a result they were terribly em barrassed and angered be cause every so , often they would break into a spell of sobbing when they weren't in the least sad. I remember people who, after a little stroke, all of a sudden, found themselves unable to sleep. I remember many who, suddenly, lost 50 or 60 pounds in weight without any change in their diet. -I remember a distinguished man of 60 who, all his days, had had a mar velous memory. He woke one morning with half of that memory gone. He couldn't then remember the names, even of his housekeeper, or of his secretary.-! remember an exploring engineer, a bache lor of 55, who had never known what fear was. After little stroke that had made him very dizzy, he was so afraid to be alone that he sent for his sister to come and live in his apartment.
