MAIL TltllUNI, Hf-4, Or. C TfcnJ. J.m M. 1S9 J In tho Day's (lews By FRANK JENKINS ' The foreign ministers con ference recesses without reaching an agreement on West Berlin. Whether it can reach such an agreement when it reassembles on July 13 is on the knees of the gods. But it is improbable The big thing at the mo ment is that the Soviets haven't decided to SHOOT US OUT and that we haven't decided to SHOOT OUR WAY IN with reinforcements if East German communists replace the Soviets in the Berlin situation. Cft ITER all- f- What difference would an agreement make? The Russians would break it whenever it suited their pur pose to do so. Our job is to remain so strong that the Russians . won't regard it as safe to start a war. I 5 YOU'RE interested in ruckuses, keep your eye on Louisiana. What is hap pening there is very interest ing. In particular, watch this man Lether Fraatr, who is Louisiana" lieutenant gov ernor. He seems to . be the exact opposite of the Long tribe. He started out as a history tesjcher in Longville, ' La. He hs been president rff ' Louisiana's Southeastern In- : stitute at Lafayette and later -was president of McNeese State college at Lake Charles His ambition was said to be to wind up as president of Louisiana State Univer sity, but he got side-tracked into politics and was elected lieutenant-governor. He was expected to be elected gov ernor in 1960 - with relative- ly little trouble. rpHEN- A He collapsed from over work a few months ago. He may have had a light stroke. -At any rate, Governor Long came out quickly with an an nouncement that he was go ing to run again. Shortly afterward? he went off his rocker. Who will be governor in the interval between now and the next election hasn't been officially determined as this is written. T OUISIANA'S troubles started with Huey Long, avho was one of the gifted rabble-rousers of all time. 'His slogan was MAKE ' IVERY MAN A KING. It was a fascinating doctrine. It ajfcused hopes that can't be realized overnight, and which are never brought to " fruition by demagogs. The - basic trouble with it is that very man ISNT -a king. EVERY man hasn't got what it takes. Even our Declara- tion of Independence, which - is perhaps the greatest docu- - merit in world history, hedges on that point. It says merely that all men are CREATED ; equah Anyway, Huey Long, fly : ing on the wings of his magic ; slogan, was soaring to un- believable heights when his career was cut short as is the case so often with despo tic demagogues - by an a: sassin's bullet. Where he might have gone if he had lived no one even yet is pre pared to say. . fTTHIS much is certain A v He wouldn't have gone " very far in the direction en visioned by our Founding Fathers. rS much let us hope That here in our mythi cal State of Jefferson-which, we , proudly proclaim, is a State of Mind - we never reach the point where we tolerate supermen of the Huey Long type. ?uey Long had glamor -loads of it. - But history teaches this clear lesson: TOO MUCH GLAMOR is a danger ous thing. Heavy Vote in Hawaii Predicted Honolulu - (UPD - Edward E. Johnston, secretary of state of Hawaii, predicted today that 85 per cent of Hawaii's 174,000 registered voters would turn out Saturday to put their stamp of approval on statehood and nominate candidates. Johnston said, "for years Hawaii has had the best voter turnout in the United States in its territorial elections, and I am sure that a good many people will want to be able to tell their grandchildren ,they voted for statehood." Santa Cruz, Calif. -(UPD-Two Sunnyvale men were arrested Wednesday for taking .a hu morously macabre approach to the threat of maneater sharks in California's coastal waters. Roger Lejeunesse, 21, and ' Harvey L. Stovall, 23, were taken into custody for erecting 38 signs along the oceanfront , reading: "Please do not feed the sharks. Make it fun from the start.
