Fads on Loan Program Reviewed Ashland - Information con cerning the student loan pro gram of the National Defense Education act has been re leased by Dr. Alvin Fellers, director of student affairs at Southern Oregon college. Through the new loan fund an undergraduate or graduate student in need of financial assistance may be eligible to borrow up to $1,000 a year. Students in the upper 50 per cent of their classes who express a desire to teach in elementary or secondary schools may borrow a sum not exceeding $5,000, Fellers said. In addition to prospective teachers, students whose aca demic background indicate a preparation and capacity in science, mathematics, engi neering, or modern foreign languages, are among the pre ferred groups. However, funds are available for those going Into other professions and to those who feel sure they will complete a college program. Loans are granted on the basis of financial need and superior academic back ground, interests and ability, Fellers added. Anyone inter ested in applying for such a loan or in securing further de tails may call, write, or make other inquiry at the student affairs office.
